About The Position

Athens Administrators has an immediate need for a full-time Division Claims Manager to support our Workers Compensation department by leading a team of supervisors in Texas. Management that lives less than 36 miles from the San Antonio office are required to work once a week in the office. The remaining days can be worked remotely if technical requirements are met, and the employee resides in Texas. Athens offices are open for business Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. local time. The Division Claims Manager will be a dynamic and client-focused professional who embodies a collaborative leadership style. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required for all positions
  • The Texas 03 Workers’ Compensation license is required
  • Previous workers’ compensation claims experience with a minimum of (3) years of supervisory experience including hiring, training, developing, retaining, and directing staff
  • Ability to attend in‑person meetings, client meetings, conferences, and travel throughout Texas (including overnight travel); valid driver’s license required
  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal, presentations) and ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills, including ability to plan, prioritize, and independently manage workload, projects, and staff
  • Strong analytical, reasoning, and problem‑solving skills with ability to interpret data and use findings to support business decisions
  • Ability to handle stressful situations, manage deadlines, and exercise sound judgment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn additional software; able to leverage technology to support business operations and improve efficiency

Responsibilities

  • Lead the execution of claims strategies to meet company initiatives and performance goals as part of the Senior Operations Group (SOG).
  • Provide daily direction, guidance, and coaching to Claims Supervisors; make timely claim strategy decisions (plan of action, payments, reserves, settlements).
  • Ensure quality file handling and resolution, including meeting unit closing goals, verifying proper reserves, delivering thorough claims analysis, and guiding files to proper resolution.
  • Maintain current diaries per client requirements; ensure consistent, accurate claims coding organization‑wide.
  • Achieve audit results that meet or exceed Athens and client best‑practice standards; translate audit outcomes into sustainable quality improvements.
  • Monitor and improve Supervisor FOA (Fraction of the Action) performance against benchmarks.
  • Review work outputs for accuracy and completeness; leverage peer review where appropriate.
  • Coordinate and deliver claims training; collaborate with attorneys to craft settlements and support effective litigation strategies.
  • Authorize payments and settlements within delegated authority.
  • Resolve workflow issues and escalate complex claim challenges appropriately.
  • Lead and participate in client stewardship presentations, file reviews, and workers’ compensation meetings; collaborate closely with Sales on new‑business presentations.
  • Work collaboratively with Athens and client senior management; communicate clearly with clients, investigators, injured workers, and key stakeholders.
  • Handle audit responses and integrate results into other quality measures to ensure consistent improvements.
  • Seek opportunities to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and respond quickly to new instructions, policies, methods, and procedures.
  • Produce accurate, thorough, and complete work products using available resources to generate innovative solutions.
  • Provide day‑to‑day leadership, direction, and coaching to Claims Supervisors and ancillary staff (e.g., Hearing Representatives, investigators).
  • Model a consistently positive, professional, and cooperative approach; foster teamwork, transparency, and an open‑door culture.
  • Share knowledge freely; ensure staff receive timely updates from leadership meetings and that staff feedback and ideas are elevated to leadership.
  • Set clear, measurable annual performance objectives and development plans for direct reports; recognize contributions and coach for growth.
  • Address performance issues promptly and consistently; document thoroughly and partner with HR on employee relations matters.
  • Demonstrate accountability in recruiting: conduct timely resume reviews, provide interview feedback with required documentation, recommend next steps, and deliver respectful, constructive feedback to internal candidates not advancing.
  • Organize, prioritize, and assign workload across the unit; adapt staffing and priorities to changing client or business needs.
  • Lead regular unit meetings to align on priorities, quality expectations, and best practices.
  • Respond promptly to client inquiries and work urgently toward solutions; proactively identify and resolve potential service issues.
  • Maintain strong client relationships through accessibility, service calls, stewardship reviews, and effective communication.
  • Document client meeting notes in designated shared systems to ensure transparency and continuity.
  • Act with integrity and uphold the highest ethical standards; demonstrate trustworthiness and accountability in all client interactions.
  • Supervising, scheduling, assigning, monitoring, and evaluating work of assigned staff are responsibilities for supervisory positions.
  • Provide direct supervision to Claims Supervisors. Also provide partial direct supervision to ancillary staff, such as Hearing Representatives, investigators, etc.
  • Plan, assign, monitor, and evaluate work; coach to quality, timeliness, and outcomes
  • Review and approve direct reports’ monthly expense reports; ensure all expenditures are in the Company’s best interest.
  • Participate in annual budgeting and forecasting for the division; anticipate resource and expense needs.
  • Implement monitoring and reporting mechanisms to control costs without compromising quality.
  • Identify and implement hidden cost improvements and operational efficiencies.
  • Maintain working knowledge of wage and hour laws for staff; ensure timely, accurate review and approval of timecards on payroll days.
  • Contribute to claims budget planning and salary administration; manage education expenses responsibly.
  • Oversee branch office facilities management as needed; coordinate building security, maintenance, parking, and safety.
