About The Position

The Divisional Executive Director of Development will be responsible for raising operating and capital funds including the coordination of all the development staff with responsibility for providing consultation and services to all Corps in the Division including public relations, annual fund, major gifts, grant writing, volunteer department, special events, digital and direct marketing, capital campaigns, and planned giving.

Requirements

Minimum B.A. degree in the areas of business, management, or related subjects with minimum of five years of experience in business administration, fundraising, or related fields
Must have demonstrated supervising ability and first-line management and fundraising experience
Requires understanding, respect and acceptance of the philosophy of The Salvation Army
Ability to work with persons of varied socio-economic backgrounds
Ability to communicate effectively with staff and ability to delegate
Ability to operate standard office equipment and computer literacy
Manages staff fulfilling the following roles: communication; direct marketing, digital fundraising, major gifts and corporate; grants and foundations; gift planning; capital campaign consultants; and donor care
Perform all other duties as assigned
Must be in good physical health and mental health, capable of meeting program demands
Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis
Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds
Must maintain a valid Alaska Driver’s License
Must successfully complete Decision Driving Safety Test before driving for The Salvation Army and annually recertify as required
Must meet certification by and participation in The Salvation Army’s Fleet Safety Program

Responsibilities

Record, review, circulate, and maintain file of Advisory Board and Advisory Council minutes
Assist in recruitment and training of Board Members
See that development of printed material and video presentations are completed as assigned
Provide staff liaison to Metropolitan Advisory Board, Advisory Councils, and related committees
Develop pertinent materials and suitable publicity
Act as staff liaison to all Board Standing Committees, as assigned
Prepare Agendas for monthly Board and Committee meetings
Take a vital interest in the financial needs of the division
Cooperate closely with the Divisional Finance Secretary in preparing proposals and plans for the successful operation of financial development; such proposals and plans to be subject to Command Finance Council’s approval
Regularly update the Divisional Finance Council through the preparation, presentation, and interpretation of monthly reports and year-to-year comparisons
Responsible for records and correspondence pertaining to the department; organize office help and arrange for business to be carried on as necessary even when out of town
Expedite all reports required by DHQ-THQ, ensuring a high quality flow of written letters/correspondence
Familiar enough with the Capital Campaign potential in a given community to advise Command Finance Council (CFC) on its possible success or failure
Organize and conduct a Capital Campaign, as assigned
Give leadership and consultation to all special events and seasonal campaigns
Be a campaign consultant and campaign “expert” for all types of financial campaigns which are within the division
Give advice and help in the development of campaign appeals
See that the mail appeal program is organized and coordinated and will be responsible for receipting and acknowledging all gifts in the division, including memorial contributions
Plan, propose and, upon approval, implement a plan of donor recognition, including donor recognition activities
Develop and maintain a relationship with foundations and determine which programs are eligible for foundation assistance
Keep Divisional Commander current on all foundations and grants which are being proposed and processed
Be familiar with every kind of publicity, including radio, television, newspaper, all printed materials, and will supervise and monitor the public relations director in preparation of suitable publicity releases, newsletters, leaflets, booklets, Annual Reports, and other printed materials for the division, and will act as resource in these matters for Corps units
Provide supervision to the divisional planned giving director
Work with the divisional planned giving director to provide all necessary information, interpretation and dissemination of materials on Deferred Giving programs, annuities, life income agreements and trusts
Supervise a fundraising effort targeted toward individuals, corporations and philanthropic groups who have the capacity to give major gifts throughout the division
Ensure that financial development directors assume and maintain a direct contact with all major gift donors, arranging meetings with the Divisional Commander or Corps Officers as appropriate
Represent the Army in the community
Meet with influential people in the community to represent the Army
May be called upon to represent The Salvation Army in state, regional and national development conferences, which have been approved by the Divisional Commander
Supervise activities of assigned personnel; ensure adequate communication with all staff relating to adherence to Army policy and their particular job descriptions; prepare annual salary/performance reviews, and work closely with the director of human resources
Responsible to coordinate the maintenance and upkeep of the assets in the Development department. This includes Army vehicles, all facilities and equipment
Review and, if appropriate, recommend and process requisitions for the development to CFC
Responsible for budget preparation, submission and, upon approval, budget controls. This will include approval of all department vouchers and invoices
