About The Position

The Department of Public Works (DPW) Tank Inspector inspects tanks for filling, and authorizes sanitization if necessary. The Tank Inspector confirms the correct location of tanks, issues tank ID tags and all pertinent paperwork. They also collect waiver and statement of understanding signatures, and maintain and submit current paperwork to the DPW Waterworks Manager regarding the status of all tanks. The Tank Inspector will radio in the first fill information to the DPW Waterworks Dispatcher. This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is: From August - August : Full-Time , Non-Exempt , based on-site out of Black Rock City, Nevada . The deadline to apply for this role is 5:00 pm Pacific on April 1st.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of best practices regarding sanitation, potable water, and the health and safety of gray water systems.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA compliant personal protection equipment, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers.
  • Must complete training packet provided by DPW Waterworks & Plumbing Operations Manager.
  • Able to safely navigate city streets and access roads that are congested with participants, bicycles, and vehicles.
  • Time Management Skills : Effectively manages own time in accordance with important scheduling adherence and timeline goals.
  • Technology : Knowledge in how to use handheld digital devices for content capturing (training provided).
  • Communication Skills : Clearly and concisely communicates verbally and through written correspondence. Tailors communication to receiving party with appropriate professionalism. Experienced and comfortable with using 2 way radios.
  • Service Orientation : Maintains a respectful and polite demeanor, providing services with care, and offering thoughtful acknowledgement and accommodation of requests. Sensitive to others' needs and feelings, understanding and helpful.

  • Adaptability: Open to change and to considerable variety in daily tasks. Able to adjust schedule seasonally to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada.
  • OSHA 10 Certification (May be earned through in house training).
  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record

Nice To Haves

  • It is helpful if the candidate has been to Burning Man and is familiar with the event worksite, Black Rock City and its departments.
  • Experience working in remote wilderness and/or desert environments.
  • Familiarity with email, reading spreadsheets, and maps.
  • First-Aid knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with participants in the Civic Water program to assess water tank and delivery site safety.
  • Inspects tanks for filling, and authorizes sanitization as necessary, and labels water tanks that meet safety & readiness standards.
  • Updates tracking software with changes to assets as noticed in the field.
  • Maintains and submits current paperwork to the Waterworks Manager regarding status of all tanks.
  • Radios in the first fill, and updates to the Waterworks Dispatcher.
  • Complete a thorough vehicle safety inspection at the beginning and end of every shift, inspecting the condition of staff vehicle, equipment, and fluid levels (topping up as necessary).
  • Ensure the vehicle is in good working order and has required safety equipment including fire extinguisher (20 lb.) and a stocked first aid kit.
  • Be familiar with and know how to effectively use the city map booklet.
  • Immediately reports any water, tank, vehicle, or equipment safety and maintenance needs to the DPW Waterworks Manager, including vendor water equipment issues.
  • Provide services in a diplomatic and courteous manner while clearly stating department safety protocols; escalate any potential concerns to the DPW Waterworks Assistant Manager.
  • Maintain clear and respectful communication with the DPW Waterworks Team, BRC Departments, Vendors, Participants, and Artists.
  • Work with the Waterworks Crew to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans.
  • Actively participate in the maintenance of a clean and safe worksite using only OSHA approved safety equipment.
  • Review and understand the BRC Rain Contingency Plan and help to execute as directed.
  • Consistently show up and participate in Team Meetings.
  • Read, understand, and abide by the rules and codes of conduct according to the Burning man Staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
  • Help implement Burning Man’s Integrated Plan and work with all BRC departments to ensure water distribution and safety.
  • Monitor personal well-being, be aware of work expectations, and proactively address any concerns with management.
  • Perform various other duties as assigned by DPW Waterworks Program & Dispatch Manager.
  • Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  • Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.
  • Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
  • Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.
