About The Position

POSITION SUMMARY The Respite Direct Support Professional provides temporary relief to caregivers by supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). This role focuses on ensuring the individual’s safety, engagement, and well-being while promoting independence and meaningful activities. This position plays a crucial role in supporting families and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with I/DD by providing safe, engaging, and compassionate care.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Experience working with individuals with I/DD preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and commitment to supporting individuals with diverse needs and their families.
  • Ability to assist with mobility, transfers, and physical activities as needed.
  • May require occasional lifting (up to 60 lbs) and extended periods of standing or sitting.
  • Complete all required OPWDD trainings, and stay up to date with all necessary trainings.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Implement, document, and/or summarize programming as indicated in the individualized Person-Centered Plan.
  • Provide supervision and companionship to individuals with I/DD.
  • Assist with activities of daily living such as meal preparation, bathing, dressing, toileting, eating, and mobility support as needed.
  • Implement individualized support plans to engage individuals in social, recreational, and community activities.
  • Plan and implement age-appropriate activities, including recreational outings, indoor games, and community involvement.
  • Ensure a safe and supportive environment by monitoring behaviors and responding to needs effectively.
  • Manage challenging behaviors according to established protocols and positive reinforcement techniques.
  • Encourage independence by assisting with skill-building activities, communication, and appropriate social interactions.
  • Collaborate with the individual’s care team, family members, and other professionals to ensure coordinated care.
  • Follow all agency policies and procedures, and individualized service plans to maintain quality of care.
  • Communicate effectively with family members, guardians, and supervisors regarding any concerns, progress, or incidents.
  • Document daily activities, progress, and any incidents in accordance with program policies.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of the individual at all times, including monitoring for potential hazards.
  • Adheres to agency policies and procedures; follows and supports agency mission, vision, and values.
  • Other duties as assigned.
