About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Student Outreach and Recruitment, and reporting to the Senior Director of Student Outreach and Recruitment, the Dual Enrollment and Spartan East Side Promise Admissions Counselor develops and implements outreach, recruitment, and student success programming for prospective and incoming students. This role serves as a primary point of contact for the Spartan East Side Promise (SESP) program and Dual Enrollment initiatives, working closely with local school districts, families, and campus partners to support college readiness, transition, and retention. The incumbent leads workshops, coordinates programming, and provides advising and guidance to students navigating the admissions and enrollment process.

  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, practices and activities of the program area; English grammar, business writing, punctuation, spelling and arithmetic
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive information and communications with students, parents, employees and external agencies
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations
  • Ability to reason logically
  • Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on the data
  • Ability to guide potential students, parents, high school and staff individually and in group settings, referring to pre-admissions counseling when necessary
  • Skills in problem-solving and conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated ability and strong desire to provide assistance to students of diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to utilize campus and external resources available to students
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate and conduct basic research
  • Awareness of the difficulties students from non-traditional backgrounds encounter at a major university
  • Understanding and sensitivity to anxieties students experience in writing and the adjustment to college-level work
  • Up to date knowledge of learning assistance and student support field
  • Strategic thinking skills and ability to evaluate multiple perspectives
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
  • A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience

Nice To Haves

  • Upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques or related field preferred, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related
  • Experience working in outreach and recruitment in a higher education institution
  • Experience presenting to large and small audiences
  • Experience working in a K-12 or higher education enrollment services environment, preferably in admissions, counseling, or pre-college programs
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Experience in communicating admissions and or student services policies and procedures to prospective constituents

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver outreach programming to promote college readiness, admissions requirements, and dual enrollment opportunities
  • Build and maintain partnerships with local school districts, counselors, and community organizations
  • Advise prospective students and families on CSU and SJSU admissions requirements and processes
  • Coordinate and participate in recruitment events, workshops, school visits, and campus programs
  • Design and facilitate transition and yield programming, including summer bridge and orientation-related efforts
  • Provide individualized and group advising to support student transition, retention, and success
  • Serve as liaison between students, families, and campus departments to connect students with resources
  • Support communication strategies, including email, social media, and outreach campaigns
  • Assist with program evaluation, needs assessment, and continuous improvement efforts
  • Participate in Enrollment Management initiatives and support divisional events and projects
