About The Position

The lab technician assistant is a dedicated veterinary phlebotomy role that directly supports patient care in the ICU and PCW units. This position is responsible for the timely and accurate collection of blood samples, ensuring proper labeling, handling, and prompt delivery to the in house Clinical Pathology Laboratory. The role also includes performing, recording, and charging for STAT laboratory tests completed within the ICU’s on site lab space. During peak morning hours, this position focuses primarily on high volume phlebotomy and stat testing. During lower demand periods, the OPS Phlebotomist/Lab Runner is expected to assist the ECC service technicians with additional patient care support tasks as needed. This role plays a critical part in maintaining efficient workflow, supporting high standards of patient care, and ensuring rapid turnaround times for diagnostics.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated competency in venipuncture or completion of an approved phlebotomy training course.
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays from 8–12 PM.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a high-acuity environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous clinical or hospital experience.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record systems (Cornerstone / Instinct) as well as different in house laboratory systems.
  • Interest in critical care, nursing, medicine, or allied health professions.

Responsibilities

  • Attend ward rounds to understand the type and order of blood samples needed
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on ICU and PCW patients following established protocols.
  • Ensure accurate patient identification, specimen labeling, and documentation.
  • Prioritize and respond promptly to stat and timed lab draw requests.
  • Always maintain infection control and safety standards.
  • Communicate effectively with nursing and DVM staff regarding specimen needs, collection issues, or patient concerns.
  • Assist with basic patient care or unit support tasks when phlebotomy demand is low (e.g., lab stocking supplies, transporting specimens).
  • Maintain equipment and ensure phlebotomy supplies are stocked and organized.
  • Adhere to hospital policies, HIPAA regulations, and professional conduct standards.
  • Charge for samples on the practice medical record systems (Cornerstone / Instinct).
