At MacKay Sposito, we believe great people build great communities—and that starts with hiring the right talent. 2IM Group LLC. is now a part of MacKay Sposito, and we are seeking an Ecological Restoration/Vegetation Management Specialist to join our team in Chicago, IL. The Ecological Restoration/Vegetation Management Specialist assists and supports land restoration and stewardship throughout Chicagoland. They coordinate projects designed to restore and enhance the natural environment. Travel is required to assess and ensure compliance with applicable contract plans and specifications, as well as applicable codes and regulations. Personal Protective Equipment (steel-toe work boots, work pants, work shirt, prescription safety glasses, cold-weather gear, and hearing protection) will be required of the applicant. The applicant will need to be able to traverse rough and/or hilly terrain on foot, as well as stand outdoors in varying temperatures, ranging from very cold to very hot, for extended periods. Company-provided PPE includes a vehicle with safety lights, a safety vest, non-prescription safety glasses, and a hard hat. Field measuring equipment will be provided.

Requirements

  • A two-year Associate's degree or equivalent experience is required
  • At least 2-3 years of experience managing habitat restoration projects
  • Ability to walk properties on a frequent and regular basis, considering varying topography, site access, and weather conditions
  • Good organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and set effective priorities for work
  • Strong writing, speaking, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to manage projects with knowledge and skills in the subject of vegetation management
  • Works well both in a team and independently, understanding individual role in the larger strategy and proactively advancing team goals.
  • Have the aptitude to obtain a valid pesticide applicator license in the Right-of-Way and Aquatics categories.
  • A current driver’s license with a clean driving record and the ability to be insured to drive company vehicles is required.
  • Possession of an Illinois Department of Agriculture Commercial Not for Hire Applicator license within 60 days.
  • Employment requires passing a pre-employment background check and drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and support land restoration and stewardship by identifying resource concerns, determining best management practices, and developing solutions to restore native habitats and ecosystems.
  • Assess, prioritize, and implement habitat restoration projects in a variety of ecosystems, including the removal of invasive species, reducing soil erosion, increasing early successional habitat, conducting native planting, and enhancing grassland habitat.
  • Accomplish habitat restoration goals by working with a variety of partners, including landowners, conservation and civic groups, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
  • Conduct and document field inventories
  • Identify desirable plants and weeds
  • Develop comprehensive project plans and ensure that projects are being implemented according to plan
  • Regularly communicate with regulatory agencies, federal and state personnel, and necessary project oversight.
  • Manage construction, maintenance, and site improvements.
  • Assist with monitoring aquatic habitat and water quality in important waterways within project limits and assist with and analysis of monitoring results.
  • Perform the full range of duties, working independently, applying well-developed subject knowledge, and exercising judgment and initiative.
  • Receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.
  • Fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.
  • Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Receive general supervision from the manager or staff.
