About The Position

CNBC is seeking an experienced Econ Columnist to help readers make sense of the most important forces shaping the global economy. This role is centered on step-back thinking and high-level analysis—connecting data, original reporting, market signals, and policy developments into clear, authoritative columns that explain what matters and why. The ideal candidate is a big-picture thinker who can move fluidly between economic data, conversations with sources, and the work of CNBC’s reporters to surface insights that go beyond the daily news cycle. This columnist will not simply react to economic releases or market moves, but will provide context, perspective, and interpretation that helps a broad audience understand longer-term trends, trade-offs, and implications for markets, businesses, and consumers. This role requires intellectual curiosity, strong news judgment, and the ability to write with clarity and confidence about complex economic topics—without oversimplifying or overhyping them.

Requirements

  • Significant experience covering economics, macro policy, or markets at a major news organization
  • Proven ability to write analytically rigorous, well-sourced commentary on economic issues
  • Strong command of economic data and comfort interpreting reports, indicators, and research
  • Excellent news judgment and the ability to distinguish signal from noise

Nice To Haves

  • Background in economics, finance, public policy, or a related field
  • Experience working closely with data or research teams
  • Established source network among economists, policymakers, or market participants
  • A distinctive analytical voice and point of view, grounded in evidence rather than opinion

Responsibilities

  • Write regular, high-impact economics columns grounded in data, sourcing, and CNBC reporting
  • Identify and analyze macroeconomic trends, policy developments, and structural shifts affecting markets and the economy
  • Collaborate closely with reporters, editors, and data teams to develop column ideas and deepen analysis
  • Translate complex economic concepts into clear, engaging, and accessible prose for a general audience

Benefits

  • Free onsite fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment, plus daily group classes
  • Gourmet cafeteria with daily specials plus soup and salad bars
  • Free shuttle transportation to and from multiple locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Hoboken and Jersey City
  • This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and a variety of other discounts and perks.
