POSITION CONCEPT Provides engineering and operations support for substation Protection and Control (P&C) functions for major capital projects managed by the ECPM team. This position is responsible for both performing engineering work directly and offering engineering oversight to contractors performing engineering tasks on behalf of Tampa Electric. Ensures that all engineering deliverables meet TEC standards, coordinates with contractors to clarify requirements, and verifies the quality and compliance of contractor work.

Requirements

  • Engineer I - Minimum 18 months of experience or 12 months experience with an FE
  • Engineer II – Minimum 4 years of experience
  • Senior Engineer – Minimum 8 years of experience and eligibility to become a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Florida.
  • Principle Engineer – Minimum 12 years and must be a licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Education Required: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Licenses/Certifications Required: Eligible to obtain an FE in the State of Florida and must obtain within the first 2 years of employment
  • Related Experience: Required: Minimum of 2 years of experience in power system engineering and operations.
  • Supervisory Experience Required: None
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required: Must have sound knowledge of or basis to learn protection and control systems to interpret Substation and manufacturer’s drawings and to be able to independently evaluate and modify system designs.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred: Professional Engineering License in the State of Florida
  • Preferred: The ability to manage individual researcher or staff specialist responsibilities and to conduct, coordinate, and supervise complex engineering studies and reports. The ability to assist in training, orientation, work assignments and supervision of other employees.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with Electric Delivery’s System Security Department, define protection requirements and operating philosophy, and develop relay protection and control schemes in line with TEC system standards. Review and guide contractor-provided designs to ensure alignment with project goals.
  • Represent and coordinate Substation Engineering projects within Electric Delivery’s Project Management process, acting as a liaison between internal teams and contractors. Oversee the progress and technical quality of contractor work to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Evaluate and select protection and control devices, providing expertise in the procurement process. Collaborate with contractors on material selection, monitor equipment delivery, ensure proper project accounting, and verify the accuracy of manufacturers’ drawings.
  • Provide engineering support to operating departments during system checkouts. Interpret engineering designs during construction, facilitate communication between internal teams and contractors, and gather feedback for future design improvements.
  • Lead the development of protection and control drawings for assigned projects, including preliminary layouts, installation drawings, wiring diagrams, bills of material, nameplate schedules, and cable schedules. Prepare and submit work orders and necessary documentation to operating departments. Support Protection & Control crews and contractors during project execution. Reconcile all records and documentation upon project completion, including the preparation of operating and switching instructions. Oversee and review contractor-produced drawings and documentation to ensure compliance and accuracy.
