About The Position

The Emergency Department (ED) Technician/Clerk observes cardiac monitors and notifies RNs or Physician of any dysrhythmia. The ED Technician/Clerk performs a variety of unit-based clerical duties to include preparation, maintenance, and processing of patient records and supports ED daily operations. The ED Technician/Clerk assists in the care of ED patients performing assigned duties within his/ her competency and capabilities under care of supervision of a Registered Nurse. Collaborates with all members of the Health Care Team in the coordination of patient flow in the ED

Requirements

  • Experience with computers including Microsoft Office programs
  • Customer Service
  • High school graduate or GED, including ability to read, write, and comprehend medical terminology.
  • BLS within one month of hire and on-going
  • Successful completion of EKG competency within 3 month of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Nursing Assistant or EMT experience

Responsibilities

  • Performs essential functions in accordance to performance standards listed in Emergency Department Skills Checklist
  • Demonstrates ability to perform admission, discharge and transfer procedures
  • Performs routine functions of the ED Clerk/Tech and cases assigned 
  • Checks with ED Leadership or House Supervisor for special tasks and assignments.
  • Participates in the development and achievement of department annual goals and objectives (action plans) in accordance with Nursing Services / NIHD goals and overall plan for patient care.
  • Adapts to new initiatives
  • Attends staff meetings
  • Participates in committees as appointed
  • Participates in QA/PI activities.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities.
  • Participates in survey or data completion as requested

  • Performs all paperwork efficiently and appropriately
  • Monitors and answers call lights and telephone in a timely fashion.
  • Performs other functions of the ED Technician/Clerk as needed.
  • Assists with cleaning and restocking of rooms.
  • Assists RN with ordering PAR and consumable supplies.
  • Assist with cleaning and turning over dirty ED rooms.
  • Perform EKGs in ED when EKG tech or respiratory therapist is unavailable.
  • Assists RN with taking vital signs when assigned.
  • Understands and able to use the unit copy/fax machine ensuring the correct HIPAA policies are followed.
  • Able to function in an emergent situation, both as a CNA (if applicable) and a Department Clerk.  Knows how to use the phone and radio system to contact the appropriate staff members.
  • Monitors patient rhythms in central cardiac monitor system.
  • Notifies RN of abnormal rhythms or lethal dysrhythmias
  • Arranges own knowledge base and development by attending formal and informal educational activities.
