The Editorial Director provides strategic leadership for editorial quality, peer review performance, and research integrity across the AIP Publishing journal portfolio. Working closely with Publishing Directors, Editors-in-Chief, and editorial boards, the role promotes excellence in editorial processes and supports the development and positioning of journals across the portfolio. The Editorial Director may provide direct oversight of select journals during periods of transition, strategic repositioning, or leadership change, to ensure that they meet AIP Publishing’s commitment to editorial excellence. The role also leads the development and oversight of AIP Publishing’s Research Integrity program, ensuring consistent policies, processes, and expertise support ethical, transparent, and trusted publishing practices. This role applies a portfolio-wide editorial lens, strengthening peer review systems, editorial leadership, and research integrity practices to support the long-term quality, credibility and success of the journal program.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in a relevant discipline required; PhD preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in scholarly publishing, editorial leadership, or a related role.
  • Experience working closely with Editors-in-Chief and editorial boards.
  • Demonstrated experience improving editorial workflows, peer review performance, or journal operations.
  • Deep knowledge of scholarly publishing, peer review systems, and editorial workflows.
  • Strong understanding of research integrity standards and publication ethics.
  • Ability to analyze editorial performance data and use insights to guide improvements.
  • Strong communication and relationship management skills with editors and research communities.
  • Sound judgment in handling complex editorial or ethical issues.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to editorial strategy across the AIP Publishing journal portfolio.
  • Advise Publishing Directors and Editors-in-Chief on journal positioning, editorial development, and community engagement.
  • Promote consistent editorial standards, policies, and governance across journals.
  • Serve as a senior editorial partner to Editors-in-Chief and editorial boards across the portfolio.
  • Support editor onboarding, development, and succession planning across the portfolio.
  • Collaborate with Publishing Directors and cross-functional teams to align editorial priorities with portfolio development and publishing strategy.
  • Provide direct editorial oversight for select journals during transitions, launches, or strategic repositioning.
  • Lead the development and oversight of AIP Publishing’s Research Integrity program, including policies and staff supporting the program.
  • Provide guidance on complex publication ethics and research integrity cases across the journal portfolio.
  • Embed initiatives to improve peer review performance, reviewer engagement, and editorial decision integrity.
  • Support retention of quality submissions across the portfolio by supporting the improvement transfer pathways and editorial decision processes.
  • Use editorial performance data to identify trends and guide improvements across journals.
