About The Position

This position is located at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind. This is journeyman-level work in the construction, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures throughout school facilities. Work assignments are received from a foreman or other supervisor and are performed independently in accordance with accepted trade practices and applicable electrical codes. New or unusual work orders are typically accompanied by sketches, blueprints, or detailed instructions.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the electrical trade.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade.
  • Ability to locate and correct defects in electrical systems and equipment.
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints and sketches.
  • Ability to train apprentices in the electrical trade.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems and safety requirements specific to educational or institutional facilities.
  • Ability to coordinate work with other trades and departments to ensure school operations are not disrupted.
  • Ability to interpret and apply electrical codes, safety regulations, and industry standards in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical systems and implement effective corrective actions in a timely manner.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in the construction or repair of secondary electrical systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.

  • Receive work assignments from a foreman or other supervisor and perform independently in accordance with accepted trade practices and applicable electrical codes.
  • Work from sketches, blueprints, or detailed instructions for new or unusual work orders.
  • Ensure attention to safety protocols and adherence to regulatory standards to ensure safe operation within academic, residential, and administrative environments.
  • Ensure electrical systems effectively support classrooms, residential areas, administrative spaces, and specialized instructional equipment.
  • Coordinate with other maintenance staff and contractors to ensure projects are completed efficiently, safely, and with minimal disruption to school operations.
