Job Summary: The Electroencephalogram (EEG)/Electromyography (EMG) Technician performs and assists physicians with various electroneurodiagnostic testing and procedures, to include Electromyography (EMG), Nerve Conduct Studies (NCS), and Electroencephalogram (EEG) procedures. The incumbent in this position provides assistance to patients in these various areas. The incumbent in this position will support the mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives of Mary Washington Healthcare and must demonstrate a commitment to quality service to patients, physicians, the public, and co-workers.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • American Heart Association CPR certification required at time of hire.
  • Minimum of12 months clinical experience in a field of Electroneurodiagnostics, EMG, NCS, and/or EEG preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate of Neurodiagnostic Technology or AMA EEG Program or equivalent preferred.
  • EMG/NCS American Board of Registration of Electroenciphalographic and Evoked Potential Technologist (ABRET) certified preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts and/or assists with routine testing as outlined in department scope of practice, policy and procedures, quality assurance standards, and CBOTs. Routine testing includes but is not limited to: Electroencephalogram (EEG), Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential (BAEP), Visual Evoked Potential (VEP), Electrocerebral Silence Study, Electromyography (EMG), and Nerve Conduct Studies (NCS).
  • Provides patient instructions, education, and evaluates the patient’s response to testing.
  • Outlines the nature of the procedures and tests with the patient.
  • Answers questions patients may have as to hazards or discomforts presented by the test or procedures.
  • Maintains and orders supplies and EMG machine parts inventory.
  • Maintains cleanliness of exam rooms and equipment; prepares testing rooms with clean linen and all necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Interfaces professionally and effectively with physicians, fellow staff, and other disciplines to evaluate and modify testing as needed.
  • Participates in quality and performance improvement processes.
  • Assists leadership, team members, and physicians in activities that add value to positive patient outcomes and improve hospital operations.
  • Verifies patient insurance benefits and obtains pre-authorizations as needed for procedures.
  • Documents patient information pertinent to testing to ensure comprehensive, timely, and accurate recording, accounting, and reporting of clinical findings.
  • Sends copies of test results to referring physicians, medical records, and files in office chart.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
