About The Position

The individual in this position will manage and implement library services and programs; instruct students in the use of library resources and technology; support teachers with lesson planning and instructional materials; and assist with daily library operations, including circulation, cataloging, inventory, and maintaining an effective learning environment. Direct Accountability and Report: Works under the supervision of the school principal, who is responsible for managing a library and media instructional program and services for the elementary schools. An annual evaluation will be based upon the job description, district and personal goals and objectives specific to the school or the position, and the performance of the library/media specialist.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.
  • Must meet Virginia Department of Education licensure requirements for a School Library Media Specialist and hold or be eligible for an appropriate Virginia license.
  • Minimum of three (3) years working with students in some instructional setting.
  • Knowledge of the philosophy and techniques of library service
  • Demonstrated knowledge of library materials and resources
  • Creativity to develop and implement library programs and services
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
  • Positive attitude toward library users with special needs
  • Knowledge of computers, the internet, and commercially available library software
  • Ability to think analytically and to develop new or revised systems, procedures, and workflow

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Studies, or Library and Information Studies (MLS or equivalent) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Train and supervise library technicians, assistants, other support staff, and volunteers
  • Prepare library budgets
  • Research computers, other equipment, and resources for purchase, as needed.
  • Monitor and maintain resources with appropriate arrangement and the repair of damaged materials.
  • Organize IT access and solve simple user problems.
  • Ensure copyright license agreements, and policy and procedures for library operations are followed.
  • Lift, carry, or push carts of 20 pounds or less.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Seek to expand media services (MakerSpace, Learning Spaces, Digital Interactive Stations, Media Room, Computer Carts, Reading Centers, and Spaces) with the support of building administrators to impact student learning.
  • Help students research to evaluate search results and reference materials
  • Plan programs for different audiences and media engagement with individual students and classes with activities such as story time/reading challenges appropriate for grade level (Reading Across America; Hour of Code Activities; Film Festival, etc.)
  • Assist teachers/classes with library visits to help students find print and/or online resources.
  • Plan classroom visits to support and deliver instruction on available information resources, research tools, and proper use of the library resources.
  • Regularly attend subject/department meetings to establish connections and gain an understanding of the curriculum and how to support teachers with appropriate resources
  • Create and use databases of library materials.
  • Maintain existing collections and choose new books, videos, and other materials for purchase and feature displays.
  • Research new books and materials by reading book reviews, publishers’ announcements, and catalogs.
  • Organize library materials and ensure the process of checking materials in and out and cataloging and shelving new/returned items are efficiently managed.
  • Manage counter activity.
  • Maintain an organized and responsive learning environment with expectations posted and enforced.
  • Works to promote students’ well-being and success.
  • Adheres to federal and state laws, school and division policies, and ethical guidelines.
  • Sets goals for improvement of knowledge and skills.
  • Works in a collegial and collaborative manner with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and the community.
  • Participate and lead professional development to support teachers, students, and parents' skills and knowledge in library science.
