About The Position

The Special Education Lead Teacher performs duties ranging from student instruction, to coordinating and completing due process paperwork, to overseeing the special education assessment process from start to finish. This position requires vast knowledge of the special education system in the state of Minnesota. The legal aspects of this position require acute attention to detail, process, and timelines. The Special Education Lead Teacher supervises some Associate Educators and must clearly communicate with staff members, families, and outside consultants in order to effectively complete the duties of the job.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Special Education or related field (Required)
  • Valid Minnesota special education teaching license (Required)
  • 3-5 years experience working with elementary-aged students with disabilities (Required)
  • Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and Minnesota Rule 3525 (Required)
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills (Required)
  • Leadership, supervisory, and organizational abilities (Required)
  • Experience serving on leadership teams or committees (Required)

  • Preferred Minnesota-Specific Training/Certifications:
  • Training in Minnesota's MTSS framework
  • Familiarity with MARSS (Minnesota Automated Reporting Student System) data reporting

  • Familiarity with Minnesota State Academic Standards
  • Training in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)

Responsibilities

  • Supervise special education staff, including paraprofessionals and case managers
  • Coaching and mentoring special education teachers
  • Modeling evidence-based instructional practices
  • Supporting fidelity of IEP implementation in classrooms
  • Participate in school leadership committees alongside other department heads
  • Work closely with the middle school special education coordinator to ensure seamless transitions and program continuity
  • Coordinate IEP plan meetings, ensuring proper procedures and timelines
  • Support teachers in implementing accommodations and instructional strategies
  • Facilitate communication between general education teachers, special education staff, and families
  • Oversee special education documentation and compliance requirements
  • Reviewing school-wide special education data
  • Identifying trends and compliance risks
  • Reporting outcomes to leadership and MDE
  • Provide professional development on inclusive practices and differentiated instruction
  • Collaborate with related service providers (speech, OT, social work, DAPE, DHH, etc.)
  • Monitor student progress and support data-driven decision making
  • Assist with transition planning and grade-level advancement decisions
  • Serve as a resource for behavior support strategies and interventions
  • Coordinate with district special education leadership and outside agencies
  • Ensure compliance with Minnesota Rule 3525 (Special Education Rules)
  • Support implementation of Minnesota's Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
  • Coordinate with county social services and community health boards as needed
  • Contribute to school-wide strategic planning and policy development
  • Creating and/or updating the annual Total Special Educations Systems manual and Restrictive Procedures Plan.
  • Plans and implements professional development opportunities for all staff related special education program needs.
  • Acts as a liaison for the child find process.
  • Leads Child Study Meetings.
  • Organizes and oversees the district’s extended school year program.
  • Coordinate the implementation of a Special Education Advisory Council.
  • Manage fiscal processes such as:
  • Procurements of equipment and supplies
  • Maintaining equipment and assessment inventory
  • Third Party Billing
  • MARSS Reporting
  • PARS / Semi-annual Certifications
  • Staffing and Hiring
  • Screening and interviewing candidates
  • Making hiring recommendations
  • Supporting onboarding and induction of new special education staff
