About The Position

Employees at this level serve as members of a (2-4) two to four person engine crew. Engine Operator I: They are expected to have basic fire fighting skills and knowledge of basic fire behavior. The work involves activities related to wildland fire suppression/management/control as a firefighter on an engine, helideck module, or hand crew. Other related duties might involve fire prevention, patrol, fuels management projects and repair of and will be required to assist other Fire Management staff with various work projects such as cutting and piling vegetation, operating ATVs, grass seeding, fencing and mowing. The nature of work is characterized by the varied nature of assignments Engine Operator II: This position is the equivalent of the advanced firefighter/squad boss (FFT 1). This position may be required to supervise 5-7 firefighters, or act as the Engine Crew Leader if one is not present. This position is expected to have advanced fire knowledge of basic fire behavior. The work involves activities related to Wildland fire suppression/management/control as a firefighter on an engine, helideck module, or hand crew. Other related duties might involve fire prevention, patrol, fuels management projects and repair of firefighting tools, equipment and facilities. Employees will also work as part of the Prescribed Burn Crew and will be required to assist other Fire Management staff with various work projects such as cutting and piling vegetation, operating UTVs, grass seeding, fencing and mowing. The nature of work is characterized by the varied nature of assignments.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • current fire training certificates
  • minimum of 2 seasons in fire suppression and fire management (each season includes the summer months June, July, August, and September
  • pass a current pack test with Arduous rating
  • Red Card qualified
  • valid Washington State Driver’s License
  • insurable under the Tribe’s Licensing requirements
  • qualify for a U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operator’s Identification Card
  • Knowledge of standard fire program requirements, suppression tactics, methods and procedures and skill in the use of wildland fire firefighting hand tools, pumps, and hoses, and chainsaw sufficient to perform routine assigned fire suppression and prescribed assignment and to maintain firefighter tools and equipment basic knowledge of fire behavior, hazards, and accepted fire safety practices and procedures to prevent injury and loss of life.
  • some knowledge of agency and interagency qualifications, position task book requirements and certification standards
  • ability to perform duties under stressful and adverse operation conditions, such as long work hours, heavy workloads, emergency situations, adverse working and environment conditions
