Job Description: The Space and Power Management Group (SPM) is the power systems division of Microchip and a leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of high-performance modules, power switching, and power management systems. We have an opening at our Garden Grove facility for an internship electromechanical engineering position. Microchip takes the approach of providing complete sub-system level power solutions for our customers. Our primary markets are in Space and military Systems and Flight Critical Aviation systems. We place great emphasis on validated solutions that work right the first time. We're looking for a critical Engineer I-Manufacturing to join our team! In this role, you'll play a key role in designing, developing, and building prototype devices, the tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures that will help the team sustain existing business and support our rapid growth and in development of new electromechanical power switching devices.

Requirements

  • Must work with Design engineers to design jigs, fixtures, work platforms, various hand tools, and specialized tools as required used to assemble small components.
  • Must enjoys the intersection of mechanical precision and manual craftsmanship. In this role, you will be ensuring our subassembly and final assembly stages are repeatable and meeting the highest quality standards in a high-mix production environment.
  • Must be able to initiate or take fixtures or tool concepts for existing or new process, investigate fixtures design options, and drive development from DWG to completion.
  • Familiarity and hands on experience with machining, milling, surface grinders, stampings, progressive stamping, wire EDM, parts cleaning, plating, heat-treating, as required in fabrication of assembly of small components manufacturing is a plus.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and SolidWorks is a must
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering with 0 - 2.5 years of relevant work experience
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and Mechanical design analysis software
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have proficient Technical Writing skills
  • Ability to multi-task across various tasks with shifting priorities
  • Highly energetic, motivated and self-starter
  • Willing to work in an environment that allows initiative and requires flexibility
  • This job requires access to technology, materials, software or hardware that is controlled by the export laws of the United States. Candidates are required to provide proof of either US citizenship, Permanent US residency or classification as a protected individual as defined in 8 USC 1324b (a) (3).

Responsibilities

  • Investigate manufacturing issues and tooling discrepancies, propose solutions and work with the internal machining equipment and or outside machinist to fabricate and or modify fixtures and implement corrective actions to facilitate and optimize manufacturing processes.
  • Review process documents, engineering drawings, blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies, and update as required or as requested by the department head.
  • Propose design modifications to improve reliability, performance, and cost as required or as requested by the department head.
  • Examine previously used dies, tools, jigs, and fixtures, and recommend design or construction modification to optimize the intended function of the tool and or fixture.
  • Assemble, inspect fit, surface finish, contour conformity and or repair tooling, dies, jigs, fixtures, and gauges using precision measuring instruments.
  • Select metals to be used from a range of metals and alloys based on properties such as hardness, wear, and heat tolerance.
