About The Position

The Avionics and Electrical Systems UM is responsible for ensuring that all engineering type design is compliant with applicable government regulations utilizing the Textron Aviation ODA processes. Duties include but are not limited to: Coordinating within the ODA and FAA, supporting resolution of certification issues, determination of certification basis, writing and reviewing certification plans and test plans, witnessing certification testing, documenting testing results and making a finding of compliance as an ODA UM.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in required Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or other related Engineering field.
  • FAA designee (ODA UM or DER) -14 CFR Part 23 and/or 14 CFR Part 25
  • Experience with complex certification projects integrating multiple Electrical/Avionics Systems
  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience or relative aviation technical or systems experience.
  • Strong Desire to pursue a career as an ODA UM or expand current ODA UM qualifications to include Electrical Systems for Part 23 and/or Part 25 Aircraft.
  • Strong computer, written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Time management skills are required to work multiple concurrent projects of various size and scope.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with avionics and electrical system design to the requirements of 14 CFR Part 23 and/or 14 CFR Part 25 preferred.
  • Experience with computer-aided wiring diagram and harnessing software is desired. Mentor Graphics experience is a plus.
  • Experience with electrical wiring, harnessing, and manufacturing is strongly desired.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint are required, other computer skills are a plus.
  • Any past design knowledge/experience of electrical bonding criteria, thermal cooling requirements for electronic equipment, EMI shielding, and High Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF) / Indirect Effects of Lightning (IEL) installation criteria is considered a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for successful integration and certification of vendor equipment into Textron Aviation aircraft
  • Assists in preparation of reports, engineering drawings, and other supporting documents.
  • Coordinates with direct and indirect design engineers and suppliers to determine system requirements and resolve certification issues.
  • Responsible for reviewing complex development, design, testing and certification assignments for new Avionics and Electrical System design or modifications.
  • Develops creative engineering alternatives to a design when called upon to reach desired customer expectation / outcome.
  • Performs work utilizing frequent application of in-depth engineering principles.
  • Maintain a high degree of proficiency in computer applications to accomplish tasks.
  • Requests and coordinates work performed by Engineering support groups, Experimental, Manufacturing and Suppliers of Electrical equipment through Supply Chain Management for various related projects.
  • Instructs suppliers as to Certification Requirements for materials, equipment, and hardware for utilization on aircraft in accordance with approved specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains contact with Product Support Engineering and Production Engineering departments in support of engineering problems impeding production and to assist in the incorporation of new design concepts and changes that meet regulatory requirements.
  • From a Certification perspective, reviews and evaluates supplier proposals for potential utilization on future Interior Refresh programs or future Aircraft Block Point Changes.
  • Provides guidance to design engineers into the solution of specific, complex design problems, which must be resolved during advanced design, development, and testing.
  • Assures supervision awareness of program status, problems, and successes. May be asked to provide periodic Certification / Design reviews and update presentations to management for various presentations to given to the FAA or ODA Management.
