Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications. Newport News Shipbuilding has an opportunity for a Structural Engineer to join their E12 submarine engineering team. This team provides technical support to the VCS program (new construction) through construction and certification support. Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Candidate should have; a comprehensive knowledge of processes relating to ships systems, construction and overall structure design; have demonstrated the ability to manage and direct the work of others; and the ability to interface intelligently with trades, management and the customer. Candidate should have experience with welding processes and NDT requirements, including component fabrication and assembly and final outfitting. A strong knowledge of dimensional control systems and practices is also highly desirable. Effective oral and written communication skills are important for this position. Candidate should be versed in the ship certification process and be able to efficiently develop documents to support certification events such as Work Deferral and Departure from Specification requests. Specific knowledge of SUBSAFE requirements is required. This position may require collaborative work with other internal/external design and engineering personnel; including NAVSEA, General Dynamics-Electric Boat, etc. On-site resolution of issues encountered during construction is expected. The candidate is also expected to be a strong and proactive mentor for junior engineers, aiding them in development and professional growth.
