The Engineer II – T&D Design is a professional with knowledge of and some experience in own engineering discipline with a focus on design work of high voltage facilities through 500kV in the Utility workspace. Responsible for independently performing high level engineering design functions relating to high voltage facilities such as route and site selection, transmission line design work, as well as physical, electrical, and civil design for substations. This includes the development or assisting in the development of engineering deliverables with moderate supervision. This design work will be primarily focused on newly constructed assets, but could also be called upon to assist with Maintenance activities at existing facilities. Responsible for fulfilling technical design needs on large capital projects with a focus on Transmission and Distribution, while working collaboratively with others in a project team setting. Contributes to the fulfillment of departmental technical projects and objectives. Builds knowledge of the T&D Design processes and interaction with customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (preferably Mechanical or Civil) from ABET approved curriculum or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with certification by the NCEES to sit for the FE exam
  • 3+ years of related experience
  • Step progression levels based on skill proficiency and scope of job
  • Knowledge of leading practices for their practice area
  • Willingness and ability to learn new technologies on the job
  • Proficient at functioning effectively within a team environment, present ideas and opinions in a respective and collegial manner
  • Progression to this level is strictly restricted based on critical individual capabilities and business requirements; must be supported by market survey data

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a main point of contact for technical questions and drawing reviews when design work is outsourced to an Engineering firm.
  • Serves as a technical resource, assisting other individuals and departments in the accomplishment of their duties.
  • Understand the integral parts of the particular design and ensure all items are on site and available to meet project schedule.
  • Establish and revise design philosophy to ensure long term value for the Company.
  • Provide recommendations for process improvements, as necessary.
  • Provide engineering support to other individuals and departments.
  • Able to efficiently and effectively deal with project issues with moderate oversight.
  • Leads technical discussion with customers or peers explaining the issue/problem as well as the decision process behind the solution.
  • Provides oversight/guidance to coworkers who perform similar design work.
  • Possesses social and communication skills necessary to integrate into a team, as well as effectively communicate with peers and customers.
  • Able to take on complex design issues and determine a course of action with minimal oversight.
  • Able to consider and evaluate decision implications to the company beyond the isolated immediate problem.
