About The Position

The Textile Materials Engineer will develop, understand processing, and testing of materials (leather, fabric, urethane, vinyl, carpet, etc..) to be used in production (mass transit, recreational, marine, airline, etc.). Based on data gathered and expertise, the Textile Materials Engineer will also identify and recommend the most appropriate materials for specific customer applications. Work directly with engineering and purchasing to validate new supplier materials and cost reduction initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering highly preferred;
  • At least five years of relevant experience as a materials engineer, textile or process engineer.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to fully understand customers’ requirements.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a development team.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software and software used in product testing and documentation.
  • Travel will be required.
  • Project management skills

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for raw material characterization, interaction assessment of raw materials and benchmarking competitors’ materials.
  • Will support the establishment of textile material specifications with OEMs.
  • Will support the testing and validation of textile material to OEMs.
  • Identifies, selects, and recommends materials based on customer specifications.
  • Measures performance of various materials in accordance with specifications.
  • Observes or participates in product testing process as appropriate.
  • Observes and/or participates in root cause analysis in the event of a materials failure.
  • Works with testing results to identify material failures / successes back to suppliers.
  • Collaborates with process engineers as part of a development and fabrication team to create a new material when none of the suggested materials meet specifications.
  • Create best practices and standardization for material selection and trim lamination.
  • Works with plant personnel to reduce variation and increase robustness of material usage, using IDDOV methodologies.
  • Ability to problem solve warranty and in field failures.
  • Establish a soft material database that captures lessons learned.
  • Develop internal testing methodologies and best practices.
  • Aid in manufacturing reviews to review against best practices and maintain standards.
