About The Position

The City of Brookings is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our Public Works/Engineering team. This position offers a great opportunity for someone with a broad interest in Municipal Government, Civil Engineering, and Surveying. As an Engineering Intern, you will work in a dynamic team environment, collaborating with professionals on various infrastructure projects under the supervision of the City Engineer. This role is ideal for individuals looking to gain practical experience in development, public works, and civil engineering design.

Requirements

  • Strong interest in municipal government and public infrastructure projects.
  • Enrolled in an Engineering curriculum, or related field, as a full-time student at a college, university, or vocational technical school.
  • Familiarity with surveying tools and equipment (total stations, GPS, etc.).
  • Basic understanding of civil engineering principles and design concepts.
  • Ability to work as a positive team member and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Computer experience using Microsoft Office products and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous internship or work experience in engineering or surveying.
  • Familiarity with municipal engineering standards and regulations.
  • Experience with GIS software.
  • Certification or coursework in surveying, AutoCAD, or related tools.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the conception, design, and construction management of street and sidewalk improvements.
  • Inspect sidewalks for areas in need of replacement.
  • Assist with current projects by preparing maps and researching, performing inspections, surveying, and staking.
  • Utilize electronic equipment to gather survey data for projects, download to computer, and upload into drafting software.
  • Evaluate and inspect private and public projects.
  • Document projects with photographs and daily logs.
  • Utilize AutoCAD and GIS software to produce illustrations of engineering issues and/or solutions.
  • Provide updates and issues to engineering staff.
  • Assist in meeting with the public to identify and resolve issues and concerns.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with safety standards and policies established by the City.
  • Perform other job-related duties as deemed necessary and additional duties, tasks, or responsibilities as assigned.
