About The Position

The Engineering Intern provides technical and administrative support to the Engineering Division of Elkhart Public Works & Utilities. The intern assists with construction inspection, field data collection, surveying activities, and office-based engineering support functions. This position offers practical, hands-on experience in municipal engineering operations.

Requirements

• Preference will be given to candidates pursuing a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with at least one year of undergraduate study completed.
• Candidates pursuing degrees in Environmental Engineering, Construction Management, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will also be considered.
• A valid driver’s license is required.

• Water and sewer system design

• ESRI ArcGIS

• AutoCAD
• Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications
• Ability to collect and record accurate field data
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Ability to perform technical tasks with attention to accuracy
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods.
• Ability to walk uneven terrain and construction sites.
• Ability to lift and carry light to moderate equipment.
• Ability to operate a vehicle safely.
• Visual acuity sufficient to review engineering drawings and digital data.

Responsibilities

• Assist with construction inspection of public works and utility projects.
• Perform field checks and gather engineering-related data.
• Conduct topographical surveying and support GPS-based field work.
• Assist with roadway, traffic, water, and sewer system documentation and review.
• Scan, organize, and record engineering plans and related documents.
• Perform data entry and assist in the preparation of engineering reports.
• Support GIS mapping updates and engineering documentation.
• Perform related field and office duties as assigned.
• Assist with special engineering projects as assigned.
• Support department staff with administrative or technical tasks as needed.
• Perform other duties as directed to support the goals of Public Works & Utilities.
