About The Position

This posting is for an Engineering Specialist II that is located in the District II office. The position assists engineers in the implementation and administration of roadway, and structure construction projects awarded to private contractors. Position primary purpose will be serving as Survey Party Chief providing surveying and drone services to all units within District II. This is an Advanced-Level position of which Employee must be able to serve as Survey Party Chief for the following duties. Preliminary field surveys including topographical survey, digital terrain modeling, utility location, and boundary stakeout. Process raw data files for importing into Geopak. This position also performs highway construction stakeout duties including bluetop stakeout, drainage stakeout, slope staking, finish pavement grades, curb & gutter stakeout, monolithic island layout, structure layout and proposed right of way monuments and applicable easements. Calculate and set up road templates using Data collectors. Calculate and compute earthwork quantities by average end method and DTM. Perform GPS control surveys using Trimble equipment. Maintain Part 107 Drone Pilot Licensure. Provide engineers drone photograph, videovideos, and data as requested. Work proficiently in Drone Deploy and Content Capture to process data. Review and check work performed by technicians, private engineering firms, and other NCDOT units. Review roadway and structure plans by private engineering firms for coordinatecoordinating geometry accuracy, check typical sections, and R/W offsets. Schedule and prioritize workload with minimal supervision. Resolve design issues by determining possible solutions and consulting with Engineers. Ability to establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public. Should be able to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner. Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work nights and weekends as required for any assigned project within the Division. Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety-toed shoes required.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology or Survey Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and seven years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
  • Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends as required for any assigned project within the Division.
  • Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations.
  • The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.
  • Safety-toed shoes required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with route locations and other survey policies and procedures.
  • Experience in managing or leading survey crews in daily activities.
  • Working knowledge of CADD, MicroStation, and Geopak; including editing the work of others.
  • Experience with planning and reviewing survey work performed by others
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with co-workers, management, contractors and general public to express complex technical and/or program concepts and related facts in a clear, concise, and organized manner.
