About The Position

North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer’s mission. Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day directions from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS. This position supports the National Ignition Facility (NIF) which is the world’s largest and most energetic laser facility. In this role, you will provide technical support and conduct daily operations with the Laser Bay Transport and Handling group to exchange and replace laser bay line replaceable units (LRU’s). Additionally, the successful candidate will play a critical role in supporting the NIF Sustainment Project. As an Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technician V, the successful candidate will take part in the reconfiguration of the laser bay transport support equipment by providing insight into the usability, reliability and maintainability of the equipment while taking part with the disassembly, upgrade and building of complex mechanical components and systems. Successful candidates will learn how to use and maintain large robotic transporters and cleanroom canisters that assist with the maintenance of the laser system and beampath. The individual in this role must have the ability to work independently and in a cohesive work team with a variety of disciplines, take and implement technical data and provide constructive feedback to assist in meeting the high-quality expectations of NIF. The Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technician V must possess a passion and enthusiasm to perform installations, maintenance, operations, and repair of NIF technical equipment. The successful candidates must have demonstrated exceptional high ability to absorb and retain detailed information to operate some of the unique equipment used to support NIF. These candidates are expected to support various large complex Electro-mechanical systems and associated equipment. This requires versatile, broad-based Engineering Technicians that are skilled and proficient in all hands-on maintenance, operations, and modifications to support research equipment, beampath, robotic equipment, and related components and apparatuses. Prospective candidates will be expected to work in environments such as clean rooms, elevated work platforms, confined spaces, and controlled radiological areas. The successful candidates will work in the NIF Facility and Infrastructure Systems (FInS) Section, reporting directly to the FInS Field Lead, the Engineering Technicians will work under general supervision interacting with clients, supervisors, coworkers and other technical personnel. Due to the vast and varying types of experiments, NIF is a 24/7 operational facility. This position may require the successful candidate to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and/or weekends to accomplish goals. This position may also require working alternate schedules such as 4/10’s or 12-hour shifts. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Requirements

  • A.A in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Technology or related field of equivalent combination of education or experience as it relates to facility/utility systems.
  • Demonstrated physical hands-on experience as it relates to facilities installation, operations, maintenance, and repair.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail focusing on quality of work.
  • Knowledge of analytical tools for simulating facility and utility systems.
  • Proficient in the use of all tools used for installation, testing and the repair of facility and utility systems, including facility/utility specialty air systems.
  • Experience anticipating, identifying and resolving facility and utility problems.
  • Experience and knowledgeable with LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) processes and safety codes.
  • Ability to work from detailed drawings and blueprints.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills and the ability to work independently or as a team member, working and interacting well with internal and external customers.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary, dynamic environment under tight time constraints.
  • Medically qualified to wear respiratory and protective equipment.
  • Ability to work scheduled as well as emergency overtime work.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and perform physical requirements of job including frequent twisting and pulling.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic computer skills.
  • Solid understanding of both electrical and mechanical systems, including AC/DC motors, sensors, pneumatics, and basic control circuits.
  • Knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for assembling, installing, operating, and maintaining equipment used for the transport and handling of Amplifier and Beam Transport Line Replaceable Units and beampath components, including semi-automated Laser Bay Transports and Canisters.
  • Execute the plan for the setup, recovery, inspection, and maintenance of equipment and systems, with a primary focus on Amplifier Refurbishment.
  • Perform the physical installation, commissioning, and maintenance of typical and non-typical electromechanical equipment, machinery, and control systems in accordance with national, state, and local safety codes and practices.
  • Train and qualify for beampath access and entry, and for hoisting and rigging of Amplifier and Beam Transport Line Replaceable Units in support of NIF shot operations.
  • Perform mechanical inspections, corrective and preventive maintenance, and installation projects.
  • Operate and interpret readings from test and diagnostic equipment (for example voltmeters, ohmmeters, current meters, meggers, motorized wire pulling equipment) and use a variety of power tools and hand tools to troubleshoot, install, and maintain electro- mechanical systems.
  • Working from detailed drawings, procedures, and verbal or written instructions while delivering responsive, professional customer service to internal stakeholders.
  • Prepare and maintain standard logs, records, and reports on facility, utility, and equipment status, maintenance activities, and system performance.
  • Perform all work in accordance with ES&H regulations and procedures, fulfilling Integrated Safety, Security, and Property Management responsibilities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
