GFT is seeking an Entry Level Geotechnical Engineer to join our Geotechnical, Dams & Hydraulics team! This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance at either our Pittsburgh, PA office. What you’ll be challenged to do: As an Entry Level Geotechnical Engineer, you will assist in the planning and execution of subsurface investigation programs including geotechnical drilling and geophysical techniques; perform site reconnaissance activities and slope stability evaluations for soil and rock slopes; support the development of design and construction deliverables including geotechnical reports and construction drawings; and perform analyses for power delivery infrastructure, transportation, facilities, and other types of projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering is required.
  • 0-3 years of geotechnical experience with an emphasis in subsurface exploration and/or design and development of geotechnical deliverables including reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Demonstrated interest in geotechnical engineering through prior internships, applied coursework, professional experience, and / or membership in relevant professional organizations.
  • Basic knowledge or proficiency with MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and report writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Excellent field observation and data collection/documentation skills.
  • Must be able to physically work outdoors in all seasons including being capable of lifting 30 pounds and traversing steep slopes and rough terrain.
  • Ability to travel on an as-needed basis to other GFT offices, client offices, or project work sites and will include overnight/out-of-town travel.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer-in-training (EIT) certification.
  • Experience with common geotechnical software programs such as SLIDE, SLOPE/W, LPILE, APILE, GROUP, GRLWEAP, Settle3, OpenGround and/or gINT.
  • Master’s Degree with a Geotechnical concentration.

Responsibilities

  • Perform geotechnical analyses including data interpretation, calculations, and design for various projects and facilities, including but not limited to shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, tieback anchors, soil nails, and fill and cut slopes.
  • Assist in the preparation of Client deliverables such as written reports and documentation, geotechnical correspondence, design and construction drawings and specifications.
  • Assist in the development and planning of geotechnical site characterization programs involving subsurface explorations, geophysical surveys, and laboratory testing.
  • Execute subsurface investigations in support of geotechnical design and evaluation efforts, including test boring inspection, site reconnaissance, and other data collection activities as required.
  • Apply soil and rock mechanic theory to evaluate existing slopes and design new cut/fill slopes.
  • Provide specialty geo-construction observation during the construction phase of various projects.
  • This position requires travel on an as-needed basis to other GFT offices, client offices, or project work sites and will include overnight/out-of-town travel.
