Seasonal position with the Delaware's Species Conservation and Research Program to assist the State Raptor, Grassland, and Forest Bird Biologist. Primary responsibilities include bird surveys, identifying birds by sight and sound, monitoring nest boxes as part of the Delaware Kestrel Partnership, installing and maintaining nest boxes, and trapping, capturing and banding various birds of prey, grassland, and forest bird species. Daily work may require walking up to five miles on various terrain, operating and maintaining four-wheel drive vehicles, carrying equipment, climbing high ladders, and using binoculars and a spotting scope to distinguish bird species and color bands at a distance. This field work may require long hours under strenuous or uncomfortable field conditions (e.g. heat and humidity, biting insects), on a flexible schedule (some extended days and weekend hours). Must be able to work independently and must be able to work in an efficient manner with good time management. Position may also assist with equipment inventory and maintenance, data entry, and assist with other wildlife research projects. Applicants must be available for irregular work hours during the peak field season from May 1 - June 3, including willingness to work on holidays, weekends, and outside of typical work hours, though a maximum five-day work week would be maintained, primarily Monday through Friday. Candidates should have experience relevant to some or all of the listed field skills and particularly those relating to bird identification and bird banding. Flexibility and good communication are a must during this highly productive field season, and diligence and attention to detail vital to the data processing and dissemination that follows.
