About The Position

We are seeking an Environmental Scientist with 0 - 5 years of professional experience to be part of our Environmental Services department in our Fort Lauderdale or Miami, FL office. WGI is seeking an entry level environmental scientist to serve as an “In-House” consultant to assist senior staff with technical support and local, state and federal regulatory permitting of transportation projects in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, as a function of duties for a districtwide contract with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) – District 6. The Environmental Scientist will be responsible for providing technical support to our transportation projects. This position is for someone who enjoys a mixture of office and field work and enjoys a diversity of project types. The Environmental Scientist will work under the direction of several senior-level environmental professionals with diverse areas of expertise including wetland and upland permitting, and protected species management. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field
  • Ability to identify Florida trees and wetland plants
  • Must be able to collect data in hot and difficult field conditions including remote and swampy places
  • Excellent technical writing skills and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment visa

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of threatened and endangered species that occur in Florida is a plus
  • Experience with GIS or AutoCAD is a plus
  • Knowledge of Florida and federal permitting rules is a plus
  • PADI or NAUI certifications preferred, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Assist with transportation projects by coordinating with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, planners, and surveyors
  • Collect field data such as soil and groundwater sampling, tree surveys, wetland assessments, protected species surveys, and gopher tortoise relocation
  • Conducting benthic resource surveys (seagrasses and corals)
  • Analyze data, prepare graphics, write technical reports, and prepare environmental permit applications
  • other responsibilites as assigned by the manager
