About The Position

Under the guidance of the Environmental Director, the Environmental Specialist plays a vital role in supporting the diverse functions of the Environmental Department. This includes work related to water and air quality, resource and land management, waste management, community outreach, and other environmental priorities of the Soboba Reservation particularly those tied to state and federal grant obligations. The ideal candidate will possess a solid foundation in environmental science and demonstrate proficiency in applying scientific methods to carry out fieldwork, data analysis, and program implementation across these focus areas. A key responsibility of this role is translating complex environmental concepts into accessible, culturally relevant educational materials that foster environmental awareness within the Soboba Tribal community. This may involve delivering presentations in schools, organizing community events, and leading public engagement initiatives. The Environmental Specialist will collaborate closely with tribal departments, as well as state and federal agencies, to develop and participate in environmental projects that benefit the Reservation. This dynamic position occasionally requires flexible hours, outdoor fieldwork, overnight travel, and the ability to manage a wide range of environmental tasks.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of:  Scientific principles methodologies, and techniques commonly applied in environmental research and field studies.
  • A proficient understanding of environmental regulations including, the EPA Clean Water Act (Sections 106 & 319), the Clean Air Act (Sections 103 and 105), and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
  • Proficient administrative principles and methods including strategic goal setting, program development, and implementation.
  • Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office Suite such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook for documentation, data analysis, and communication.
  • A strong understanding of Environmental Science/Studies.
  • Ability to:  Prepare clear and concise records, reports, correspondence and other written materials in accordance with strict guidelines.
  • Communicate ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with staff and other governmental personnel encountered in the course of the work.
  • Collect field data, perform data management and data analytics, and be able to meet program/project deadlines.
  • Minimum requirement of a BS or BA in Environmental Science or related field.
  • 1 to 2 years’ experience in data gathering for reports and delivering oral presentations
  • Experience working on environmental programs and projects related to restoration, conservation, or mitigation
  • A valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Tribes Vehicle Insurance Policy
  • All applicants are required to complete the pre-screen Background Clearance and Drug Testing

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Native American Programs and EPA programs is preferred
  • Ability to operate a manual transmission is preferred (not required)
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certificate preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead and complete quarterly projects to ensure full compliance with state and federal environmental grant requirements
  • Identify and pursue new grant opportunities aimed at expanding departmental operations and increasing capacity
  • Operate scientific monitoring equipment for air and water quality assessments, ensuring accurate data collection and reporting
  • Collaborate with state and federal agencies through environmental consultations and interagency coordination
  • Participate in workshops and trainings to stay current on environmental regulations, technologies, and best practices
  • Develop comprehensive project workplans, educational materials, and technical reports to support departmental initiatives and community outreach
