As an Epidemiologist Intern with Oakland County Government, you won’t just observe public health work — you’ll actively contribute to protecting the health of our communities. This hands-on internship offers valuable experience in disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, and data-driven decision-making while working alongside experienced epidemiologists and public health professionals.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in a Master's of Public Health program at an accredited college or university.
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license.
  • Must submit to immunizations as required by the Department of Health & Human Services and submit to a tuberculin skin test or chest x-ray, at County expense.
  • Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator’s or chauffer’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, organize, and analyze data related to communicable diseases, chronic diseases, injuries, and population health trends
  • Assist in maintaining disease reporting systems and preparing reports for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and other state agencies
  • Participate in field investigations of communicable disease outbreaks at community locations such as hotels or food establishments
  • Help identify causes of epidemic situations through data analysis and interpretation
  • Support implementation of disease and injury prevention strategies
  • Assist in preparing written and statistical reports and presentations for Health Division leadership
  • Utilize countywide and department-specific software systems to support epidemiological tracking and reporting
  • Contribute to special studies and public health projects as assigned
  • Collects and retains statistical information on communicable diseases, chronic diseases and injuries, and population statistics from various records, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reports, and Health Division files for future health planning.
  • May prepare written and statistical reports for submission and/or presentation to the (MDHHS) and other state agencies and Health Division personnel.
  • Participates in field investigations of epidemic situations and communicable disease outbreak studies at hotels or food establishments involving analysis and interpretation of data collected to determine the origin and cause of the disease(s).
  • Assists with the control measures to limit spread.
  • Assists with the implementation of disease and injury control policy relative to ongoing and projected disease control activities for the various service areas of the Health Division, and for concerned community agencies and officials.
  • Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
  • Assists in a variety of activities performed by Health Division personnel.
