About The Position

Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties: The essential duties for the Equipment Mechanic I include: Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems. Handles and disposes of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws. Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights. Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system. Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges. Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment. Performs emergency spot repairs. Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities. Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Additional duties for Equipment Mechanic II include those listed above and: Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information. Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.

Requirements

  • Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
  • Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.
  • US Military CDL Equivalent Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class “A” CDL within 180 days of employment.
  • Considerable knowledge of: Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines
  • Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems
  • Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications
  • Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures
  • Read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
