About The Position

Under general supervision, performs skilled and semiskilled work in the operation of a variety of motorized equipment and heavy equipment, used to excavate, load, transfer, or move dirt, gravel, or other material in the maintenance or construction of drainage, streets, use bucket truck to trim trees, use truck with grapple arm to remove debris from city Right of Way and other public properties in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff. (Operates light equipment to accomplish assigned activities; may include driving trucks.)

Requirements

  • Knowledge of operating characteristics and safety procedures for equipment being operated and the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle code relating to operation of light and heavy motorized equipment
  • Knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment commonly used in construction
  • Knowledge of excavation, confined space, high pressure, electrical, and other safety hazards found in a construction environment
  • Knowledge of City of Seguin safety practices and procedures, including traffic control
  • Physical Ability to: lift and maneuver up to 85 pounds (i.e. construction materials, pipe, bags of concrete, etc.); climb and maintain balance on ladder; ascend and descend up to 30" high steps numerous times per day; do repetitive bending and kneeling; and perform strenuous work in the outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to: read and under�stand construction and utility diagrams; service and make minor repairs on equip�ment and to know safety standards to prevent hazards; understand and follow written and oral instructions; work effectively and cooperatively with other employees; and maintain Texas driver's license (applicable to job responsibilities) and good driving record. Other: may be required to have ability to read and follow construction and utility diagrams.
  • High school graduation, or its equivalent, and at least one year of experience operating equipment; or sufficient education to read and write, plus at least two years of experience operating equipment.
  • Class "A or B" Commercial Driver's License is required within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Operates light equipment such as tractor, mower, sweeper, or truck, brush chipper as required and instructed in the maintenance of City streets, Right of Ways and brush removal
  • Performs unskilled and semi-skilled labor work related to various maintenance and construction activities
  • Checks oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic systems and performs other routine inspections to ensure vehicle is in proper working condition on a daily basis
  • Transports tools and equipment to and from work sites
  • Provides assistance with and suggestions for increased safety during assigned projects
  • Grades, maintains, patches, or resurfaces streets; may flag traffic during repairs
  • Complies with Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Loads, transports, and unloads necessary tools, equipment and materials to and from assigned projects
  • Assists with set-up of work zone barricades and signs for traffic control
  • May attend educational seminars
  • May be subject to after-hour calls
  • Observes all safety rules and procedures
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned
