About The Position

English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor Who We Are Using the slogan “Helping People Help Themselves,” JVS repairs the world, one person at a time; allowing our program participants to achieve the highest degree of independence and dignity. Our staff of more than 50 skilled professionals work with a diverse range of individuals in need of employment, education, corporate training, rehabilitation, and other specialized services. Learn more at: www.jvsnj.org . The Role JVS is seeking a part-time beginner-level ESL Instructor to conduct adult ESL classes at our East Orange, NJ location. This role involves delivering instruction on a variety of topics designed to help students integrate and succeed in their communities. The instructor will collaborate with the Director of Education and Literacy to align coursework with program goals while maintaining autonomy over lesson delivery and classroom management. Candidates should have knowledge of ESL methodologies and as well as digital competency and ability to use online teaching resources. Candidates should understand that the most important part of the program is to be student-centric and relevant. Excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills.

Requirements

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills.
  • Knowledge of ESL methodologies
  • Digital competency and ability to use online teaching resources
  • Minimum BA degree
  • Ability to teach in-person

Nice To Haves

  • TESOL Certification (preferred)
  • Experience teaching Beginning ESL learners (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Conducts classes 24 hours per week - Monday through Friday mornings.
  • Utilizes a variety of approaches to maximize the learning of a range of students
  • Incorporates learning on such issues as workplace skills, health literacy, and financial literacy into the program
  • Assigns and grades homework assignments and periodic assessments
  • Motivates students
  • Recognizes student achievement
  • Ability to teach in-person
  • Monitors and reports attendance
  • Assures that essential topics related to life and work skills constitute the major portion of class time
  • Prepares students for post-tests which delineate progress
  • Maintains contact with department staff to address attendance concerns
  • Utilizes SmartBoard, computers and/ or cell phones with students on a regular basis
