About The Position

The Fabric Data Engineer partners with the BI team and functional units across the university system to design, build, and optimize modern data solutions within Microsoft Fabric, our primary enterprise analytics platform. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining end‑to‑end data pipelines, implementing lakehouse and warehouse architectures, and ensuring high‑quality datasets drive actionable insights. The role will also support development in Power BI, semantic modeling, and governance within Fabric. This position reports directly to the Associate VP of Business Intelligence. Hours will follow a standard Monday-Friday full-time schedule with some evening and weekend work based on technology release cycles or other business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering or a closely related field desired. 3 years of equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirement.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in data engineering, including dimensional modeling and data architecture.
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric, including Fabric workloads such as Data Factory, Lakehouse, Warehouse and Power BI.
  • Experience with SQL, DAX, and at least one modern programming language (Python preferred; C# or Java acceptable).
  • Experience with either PySpark, SQL, or .NET within Fabric environments.
  • Experience developing and orchestrating cloud‑native pipelines and transformations.
  • Deep knowledge of Microsoft Fabric architecture, including Lakehouse, Warehouse, Data Factory, Power BI.
  • Ability to design and maintain medallion‑layer data architectures.
  • Strong proficiency with Power BI development, including DAX, data modeling, and semantic model governance.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work in an agile environment (e.g., Azure DevOps).
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Ability to quickly adopt new technologies and apply Fabric releases and roadmap learnings.
  • Strong problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills for data and pipeline‑related issues.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical specifications and scalable Fabric solutions.
  • Strong focus on accuracy, data quality, and quality assurance.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with legacy Microsoft BI stack (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS) is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and evaluate business processes and data needs to define appropriate data models, Fabric workloads, and data processing architectures.
  • Build, optimize, and maintain Microsoft Fabric pipelines (Dataflows Gen2, Data Factory, notebooks, Lakehouse operations).
  • Develop and maintain lakehouse and warehouse structures, including Delta Lake tables, medallion architecture layers, and Fabric Warehouse schemas.
  • Implement and support ingestion pipelines across APIs, databases, SaaS systems, and file‑based sources.
  • Debug and resolve data issues across Fabric pipelines, notebooks, and storage layers.
  • Develop and maintain semantic models in Power BI and Fabric for reporting consistency.
  • Configure, integrate, and manage third‑party or partner data solutions within the Fabric environment.
  • Document data structures, transformations, lineage, governance standards, and technical procedures.
  • Stay current with Fabric roadmap updates and emerging capabilities, adopting new features to drive platform maturity.
  • Collaborate closely with BI leadership and engineering staff to translate business needs into scalable Fabric solutions.
  • Partner with vendors, clients, and internal technical teams on implementation, optimization, and ongoing platform management.
  • Support, design, and implement new data solutions aligned with strategic data roadmaps, enhancements, and operational needs.
  • Apply understanding of university‑wide reporting priorities when designing robust and sustainable solutions.
  • Support and enforce change management processes for Fabric pipeline deployments and dataset promotion.
  • Handle confidential and sensitive information professionally and securely.
  • All other duties as assigned.
