About The Position

Job Summary: The Facilities and Maintenance Technician is responsible for the buildings and grounds of St. Joseph Catholic Church and School. Additionally, the Facilities and Maintenance Technician ensures that the buildings and grounds are neat, clean, and safe. The position reports to the Administrative Director. The Facilities and Maintenance Technician is expected to follow directions, be a self-starter, and require minimal supervision to complete assigned tasks. Ministerial Character The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the Parish (St. Joseph Catholic Church – Killeen, Texas) which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ’s mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them. Positions employed at St. Joseph Catholic Church – Killeen, Texas help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.

Requirements

Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in routine drywall, painting, carpentry, basic plumbing, and moderate levels of construction.
Knowledge of the equipment, methods, and materials used in ground maintenance.
Knowledge of basic electricity and plumbing, including meter reading and basic plumbing repair.
Knowledge of basic heating and cooling system operations.
Knowledge of proper safety practices and procedures.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing within time constraints.
Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
Skill in safely operating typical maintenance equipment, such as drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, various power saws, acetylene cutting torch, and welder.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other employees and the public.
Ability to recognize when to escalate notification of emergency situations to upper management.
Ability to assist staff with complex problem resolution.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
Ability to quickly recognize and analyze irregular events.
Ability to learn and communicate Parish functions and timetables.
Ability to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to read construction profiles and blueprints.

High School Diploma or GED acceptable to Texas Education Agency.
One (1) year of fulltime or two (2) years of part-time wage-earning related work experience.
Skill in reading and writing English.
Must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing or working with the pastor
Valid Texas driver’s license.
Must be certified in the Diocese of Austin EIM within 30 days of employment, and maintain certification throughout the employment period.

Responsibilities

Inspect parish grounds and facilities daily to identify areas of concern; provide the office with a prioritized task list to support a safe and welcoming environment for worship and ministry.
Perform routine, preventive, and emergency maintenance on parish buildings, grounds, and equipment, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, flooring, and general repairs (major repairs under licensed professionals with Facilities and Maintenance Technicians' guidance).
Install and maintain equipment, doors, locks, windows, fixtures, and furnishings; repair walls, paint, and flooring as needed, ensuring facilities remain inviting and well-kept for all who gather.
Monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain building systems and programs related to locks, access control, security cameras, thermostats, and sprinkler/irrigation systems; perform minor sprinkler repairs as needed.
Assist with groundskeeping and landscaping tasks when time allows, including mowing, raking, mulching, watering, and seasonal upkeep, and coordinate with vendors as directed to maintain a welcoming campus.
Work with vendors and contractors to obtain estimates, schedule services, and order supplies or repair parts as needed, with approval from the Administrative Director.
Support facility operations such as set-up/tear-down of furniture, liturgical events, and special projects, fostering an environment that enhances worship and community life.
Recruit, guide, and work alongside volunteers in a spirit of humility and respect, encouraging shared stewardship of parish facilities.
Maintain workshop, tools, and equipment in an organized manner; manage inventory in coordination with ordering needs.
Lock and unlock buildings according to established schedules; verify all doors are secure before leaving to safeguard parish resources.
Collaborate with the office scheduler to support parish ministries and school staff to provide facility access and support in the service of the parish mission.
Develop, follow, and document a facilities maintenance schedule; keep the Administrative Director updated on work status.
Must be able to effectively manage time, prioritize tasks, and respond promptly to urgent needs, supporting the parish’s ongoing ministries.
Maintain a clean and professional appearance at all times.
Must have reliable transportation.
Perform other duties or special projects as assigned.
