Why Join Us | DuPont Careers Job Summary The Facilities Engineer provides technical engineering support for laboratory and building systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient facility operations. This role partners with operations, maintenance, and project teams to troubleshoot complex system issues, optimize HVAC and building automation performance, support capital projects, and drive energy, reliability, and lifecycle improvements in compliance with applicable codes and standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology preferred; equivalent experience in facilities or industrial environments will be considered.
  • 3+ years of experience supporting laboratory and comfort HVAC systems, including design, engineering analysis, consultation, and direct support of HVAC system operation and maintenance for laboratory and office facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC and related building system control theory and application, including experience with computer‑based building automation and control systems.
  • Familiar with the sizing, specification, condition assessment, and troubleshooting of HVAC.
  • Acquainted with laboratory, and utility systems, including air handling and exhaust systems, fans, blowers, compressors, pumps, heating and cooling coils, filtration, humidification and dehumidification systems, air distribution and pressurization systems, laboratory fume hoods and biosafety cabinets, cleanrooms, heat exchangers, chillers, cooling towers, and associated utilities such as deionized water, vacuum, nitrogen, water treatment, vessels, tanks, and piping systems.
  • Working knowledge of related building and infrastructure disciplines, including fire protection, electrical distribution and classification, process hazards, and civil, structural, and architectural engineering.
  • Understanding industrial hygiene and environmental health considerations related to HVAC and laboratory systems, including indoor air quality.
  • Familiar with CAD and engineering documentation tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, or SolidWorks, as well as Microsoft 365 applications and services, with the ability to perform data and statistical analysis.
  • Demonstrated commitment to staying current with evolving HVAC, facilities, and building technologies, with the ability to apply new knowledge to solve complex or non‑routine engineering problems.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to plan, prioritize, work independently, and manage multiple concurrent projects or initiatives.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across disciplines and influence stakeholders as a technical advisor and change agent.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals, including psychrometrics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and refrigeration, with the ability to apply these principles to HVAC and laboratory systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in performing and interpreting engineering analyses such as heat load and pressure drop calculations, energy use and conservation analysis, economic evaluation of alternative equipment and system designs, and application of weather data.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply engineering documentation, including P&IDs, control schematics, and single‑line diagrams.
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry regulations, codes, and standards, including ASHRAE, AMCA, ASME, IBC, IMC, IPC, NEC, NFPA, OSHA, and SMACNA.
  • Familiarity with New Castle County and Delaware State building codes and jurisdictional requirements, as well as the application of Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP).
  • Knowledge of Lean and continuous improvement methodologies, including Kaizen, Lean Six Sigma, 5S, SMED, and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), and their application in facilities or industrial environments

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical engineering support for laboratory and building systems, including troubleshooting complex issues, monitoring equipment performance, and ensuring compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
  • Partner with operations, maintenance, researchers, and service providers to resolve system and equipment issues and implement engineered solutions that improve safety, reliability, and performance.
  • Ensure safe, reliable, and comfortable facility operations by supporting indoor air quality, laboratory ventilation, pressurization, and availability of HVAC and building automation systems (BAS), including alarms, trending, and system optimization.
  • Perform facility and equipment condition assessments to evaluate asset health, manage lifecycle data, assess risk and remaining useful life, and support five‑year capital planning.
  • Identify and implement energy conservation, sustainability, and system optimization opportunities, including recommissioning efforts, to reduce energy use and operating costs.
  • Support capital projects from scope development through design review, construction, commissioning, and system turnover, ensuring alignment with design intent and operational requirements.
  • Develop, maintain, and oversee engineering documentation, preventive and predictive maintenance (PPM) programs, CMMS data, and system turnover deliverables, including procedures, training, and as‑built documentation.
  • Analyze performance data, inspections, and maintenance history to improve system reliability, optimize lifecycle cost, and recommend corrective repairs or replacements.
