About The Position

UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Transportation Services and Safety. Lastly, there is the Campus Energy, Utilities & Operations group. Supporting these groups, are the Business Intelligence & Information Technology group and the Finance & Administration group. Asset Management has an outstanding opportunity for a Facilities Project Engineer / Architect, Civil to p rovide civil engineering technical review and oversight during all phases of Capital Projects, including, but not limited to major capital and minor capital projects. Ensure projects comply with UW’s Facilities Design Standards, identify value-engineering ideas, actively observe construction and commissioning activities, visit construction sites and write observation reports, and confirm delivery of turnover-to-operation deliverables. 15% Provide technical assistance, recommendations, calculations, and civil engineering solutions to campus planning, operation, maintenance, and alterations units. Duties may include the following: Troubleshoot and recommend solutions to resolve major operational and maintenance problems for stormwater systems, sanitary/waste water systems, potable water systems, roads and pathways, etc. Develop feasibility analysis and propose project scopes of work to renovate and upgrade systems and utilities for the Building and Utility Renewal Program. Specify and purchase recommendations for systems and equipment. Evaluate costs and review budgets. Document engineering audits and prepare analysis to identify deficiencies of building and system needs.15% Coordinate and provide civil engineering expertise and advice to shop personnel for building and utility renewal projects and assessments, corrective engineering, preventative and deferred maintenance which includes vendor negotiations and manufacturer selection. 10% Oversee the Stormwater Management program, including performing field conveyance inspections/investigations, writing reports and developing documentation to comply with city, state, and federal regulatory requirements. 10% Update and maintain Civil Engineering Systems Record Utility Drawings including, storm water systems, potable water systems, and sanitary/waste water systems. Perform field investigations and oversee investigative activities and staff to ensure field conditions reflect record utility drawing information. 8% Update the Campus Background map twice a year (July and December) which is used to create and maintain other maps owned by other users/clients. 6% Regularly interact with staff from UW Facilities’ Maintenance and Construction, Project Delivery Group, Asset Management, Environmental Health and Safety, Sustainability, Real Estate, Transportation, and others, as well as external consultants, contractors, and utility representatives. Duties include the following: Champion environmental stewardship and sustainability. Be knowledgeable of green building best practices, application of new emerging technologies, conservation strategies to reduce use of energy, water, and greenhouse gas emissions, and methods to improve water quality. Assist UW Transportation with vehicle- and pedestrian-related development, including parking lots Assist UW Real Estate with due diligence reviews and site observations. Continually seek process improvement opportunities with Campus Process Partners to eliminate waste and improve business processes. Identify life-cycle cost optimization and operational efficiencies. 6% Participate in business continuity planning and emergency response efforts. Engineering Services performs ATC-20 post-earthquake inspections that are essential for post-earthquake recovery and restoration of services. 5% Provide support for utility outages, critical system failures and other emergency events by assisting Facilities’ Shops to quickly identify ways to isolate or contain emergent failures, limit risks to life safety or property damage, and develop recommendations for corrective repairs. 5% Develop and update information on the university’s assets and utility systems and provide support to assist with utility locates of underground utilities and structures. 5% Perform engineering field investigations and calculations to develop UW’s Utility Master Plan and other infrastructure. The UMP compliments the Campus Master Plan for the Main Seattle campus. 5% Contribute to the development and update of UW’s Facilities Design Standards (FDS), including but not limited to writing of design standards and standard specifications, and drawing of standard details. The FDS guides project teams’ purpose is to implement design consistency, maintainability, future flexibility and lowest life cycle costs of new building construction and renovations. 5% Other duties as required and/or as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the practice of civil engineering or a related field.
  • Familiarity with facilities-related computer software, including design tools, CAD drafting, information systems, construction management software, computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), hydraulic modeling, Bluebeam, and the full Microsoft Office suite of applications.
  • Familiarity with applicable building codes, industry trends, and jurisdictional policy initiatives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity and ownership needed; must be customer-focused and results-oriented, innovative, creative, highly motivated, and team-oriented.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, e.g. clients, regulatory agencies and personnel, health/safety professionals, consultants, management, peers, etc. to accomplish goals that are in the best interest of the university.
  • Ability to operate University vehicles for transport of personnel, tools, and equipment to various jobs sites and remote campuses as required.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and changing requirements.
  • Record of success in civil system design and installation.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
  • Must be able to work in mechanical/electrical spaces, utility tunnels, outdoors, confined spaces, around operating equipment such as boilers, pumps, and transformers, and on active construction sites.
  • Ability to work outside of standard business hours, as required, due to emergencies, meetings, or other scheduled work that may fall outside normal work hours, including weekends.
  • This position is designated as performing an essential service and is required to report to work during any suspension of University operations, unless specifically notified otherwise.
  • Must be able to lift / move 50 pounds.
  • Professional travel may be required.
  • Must have a valid Washington Driver License.
  • Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Licensed Civil Professional Engineer in the State of Washington.
  • Experience with civil systems including, but not limited to, water, sewer, storm, natural gas, water quality features, onsite storm water management, roadways, sidewalks and pathways, earthwork, surveying, wetlands, landfills and methane, transportation and parking, accessibility.
  • Experience with occupancy types and structures found on a large research campus, including medical facilities, laboratories, classrooms, utility plants, housing, parking garages, tunnels, lift stations.
  • Experience with institutional/government/public works projects.
  • Familiarity working on integrated design-build projects
