About The Position

San Diego State University is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Facilities Project Supervisor to lead and coordinate multi-trade, MEP focused maintenance and repair projects across campus. This role directs a multi-disciplinary team, plans project execution, and ensures compliance with codes, safety standards, and timelines.

Requirements

  • Work requires thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the building and construction trades; effective supervisory practices and techniques; job design and work sequencing related to construction projects; and applicable state and federal safety, building and construction codes and regulations.
  • Must possess journey-level skill in a building or construction trade.
  • Must be able to operate all applicable building tools and equipment; plan and direct the work of skilled crafts workers and their assistants; determine and coordinate staffing, material and equipment needs for multiple jobs and projects; perform basic design work; read blueprints; work from plans and specifications; prepare rough sketches; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; ensure accuracy and maintenance of assigned record-keeping systems; prepare reports; read and write at a level appropriate for the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position.
  • Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver’s License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.
  • These abilities normally would be acquired through two years of experience working as a journey level crafts worker in one or more building trades including one year in a lead/supervisory capacity.
  • Must have demonstrated achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to those acquired through the completion of an applicable apprenticeship program.
  • Possesses journey-level skills in one of the building trades and a working knowledge of multiple building and mechanical trades sufficient to plan, coordinate, and supervise maintenance and repair activities safely and effectively.
  • Experience working in a large, complex, multi-building environment such as a higher education campus, healthcare system, government facility, or similar institutional setting.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating or supervising work involving HVAC systems, building automation systems, or controls-related maintenance activities.
  • Experience identifying, documenting, and prioritizing maintenance or operational deficiencies in building systems.
  • Experience using a computerized maintenance management system to track work, document conditions, and support maintenance planning.
  • Knowledge of asbestos, lead, mold, or other regulated materials and associated work practices.
  • Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Eight or more years of verifiable experience performing work in one or more building trades, with preference given to experience in HVAC, mechanical, electrical, or closely related fields; technical school or trades certification may substitute for one year of experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a construction-related field such as construction management, construction science, or engineering technology, or equivalent supervisory experience in facilities maintenance preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Leads planning and coordination of complex, multi-trade maintenance and repair projects for Facilities Services.
  • Collaborates with trades and consultants to develop scopes, estimates, and strategies that meet campus standards, budget, and schedule goals.
  • Oversee projects from start to finish, managing logistics, procurement, contractors, and unforeseen conditions to ensure project success.
  • Collaborates with Facilities Services and Project Management to plan and coordinate multi-trade maintenance projects.
  • Assists in resource forecasting, scheduling, and ensuring accurate project estimates and construction timelines.
  • Supervise multi-trade staff, including direct supervision of the Metal Shop staff.
  • Assign and monitor work, and maintain project data in maintenance systems.
