About The Position

The Fee Collector provides customer service, monitors and records load weights, and collects fees at the entrance booth to the landfill. The position is under the direct supervision of the Landfill Administrative Supervisor. The principal duties of the position are performed in an enclosed booth and in an outdoor environment that includes exposure to weather and landfill hazards and odors.

Requirements

  • Cash management, cash balancing and basic math techniques
  • Customer service practices and procedures
  • Learn and apply County landfill rules and regulations
  • Operate the specialized Waste Works program and Power Pay Credit Card terminal
  • Follow written and oral instructions
  • Maintain records efficiently and accurately and to prepare clear and concise reports
  • Operate a variety of standard office equipment and a two-way radio
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, supervisory personnel, and the public
  • Operate a personal computer including software applications appropriate to assigned duties
  • Successfully complete background investigation
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency preferred
  • One to three years of experience in customer service, with emphasis on cash handling and management preferred
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered
  • Clear speech with or without an accommodation, to effectively convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly and/or quickly
  • Sufficient clarity of hearing with or without reasonable accommodation to enable the employee to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information
  • Visual acuity, with or without an accommodation, to read instructions, review and organize documents
  • Requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to function in a general office environment
  • Ability to lift or move 20 pounds

Responsibilities

  • Greets the public, answers incoming phone calls, assisting and/or providing referrals to other staff as needed
  • Handles inquiries about load origination and contents, following landfill procedures and regulations
  • Assists customers with resolution of complaints, misunderstandings and problems referring to landfill rules and regulations
  • Calculates and collects customer fees based on weight of load dumped
  • Handles and balances the cash, checks, and credit cards intake for the daily cash tickets
  • Weighs and records load contents prior to dumping and following dumping to determine weight and completes appropriate record of each load dumped
  • Contacts appropriate personnel for special handling of hazardous loads
  • Monitors customer activities for compliance to rules and regulations of the landfill
  • Light cleaning and dusting of scale houses daily
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County and Department policies, procedures, and safety practices
  • Other duties as assigned
