The Opportunity: With new business fueling our growth, we’re expanding our Service team and adding a Field Service Technician. This is a hands‑on, field‑based role where you’ll perform a wide range of service activities on installed critical power systems. As the face of our business, you’ll serve as a trusted liaison to our customers, delivering value‑added services on mission‑critical equipment. Reporting to the Field Service Manager, the Field Service Technician is responsible for leading the start‑up, testing, and commissioning of low- and medium‑voltage switchgear and automatic transfer switches using specialized test equipment. This role plays a critical part in ensuring systems are properly installed, configured, validated, and fully operational prior to customer handoff. The position requires hands‑on technical expertise to diagnose and resolve issues involving paralleling switchgear, ATS, control systems, and related mechanical equipment at customer sites, while ensuring all work meets safety, quality, and performance standards.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands‑on experience performing preventive and predictive maintenance on power distribution and control equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, and related electrical, control, and automation equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable health, safety, and electrical codes and standards, including CSA, NFPA, and UL requirements.
  • Proficient with general PC tools, including email, internet, data entry, Microsoft Word, Excel, and OneNote, as well as the ability to use smartphones and mobile applications for daily work tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret detailed electrical schematics and mechanical drawings with accuracy and confidence.
  • Strong customer service orientation, with a professional, solutions‑focused approach in the field.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% as required by customer and business needs.

Nice To Haves

  • NETA or NICET certification (ETT Level II or higher) in electrical equipment testing strongly preferred.
  • OSHA 30‑Hour, MSHA, and NFPA 70E training preferred.
  • Proven experience starting up and commissioning low‑ and medium‑voltage generator paralleling switchgear.
  • Advanced knowledge of industrial electrical equipment, including switchgear, automatic transfer switches, circuit breakers, and generators.
  • Advanced understanding of industrial control systems, including metering, protective relaying, relay ladder logic, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and Human‑Machine Interfaces (HMIs).

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and manage predictive and preventative maintenance programs for installed‑base customers in the Eau Claire area (Blake River Falls).
  • Execute all aspects of field service work, including site assessments, equipment installation, start‑up, testing, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance of power distribution, control, and automation systems.
  • Lead and support complex commissioning, upgrade, and modernization activities, ensuring systems are properly configured, validated, and performing to specification prior to customer handoff.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting, service, and repair activities on paralleling switchgear, automatic transfer switches (ATS), control systems, and related mechanical equipment, applying hands‑on technical expertise to diagnose and resolve issues at customer sites.
  • Complete assigned field projects on schedule, meeting all customer functional, safety, quality, and performance requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with the local Field Service team and Thomson Power Systems (TPS) headquarters in Langley, BC, Canada, to ensure alignment, consistency, and operational excellence.
  • Build and maintain strong customer and vendor relationships, delivering a high standard of technical service, professionalism, and responsiveness.
  • Provide timely and detailed follow‑up to customer requests, ensuring clear communication and effective issue resolution.
  • Accurately track and submit project documentation, including field service reports and expense reports, in a timely manner.
  • Support the Technical Call Desk, assisting customers with diagnostics, troubleshooting, and technical guidance.
  • Adhere to established testing and maintenance procedures for breakers, switchgear, relays, and control and automation equipment to ensure safety, compliance, and reliability.
  • Support technical training programs for customers, partners, and employees on new and existing products.
  • Perform quality assurance reviews of engineering drawings, ensuring accuracy, constructability, and alignment with specifications.
