About The Position

The iconic Hotel del Coronado is looking for a Controller to join the team! Be part of America’s beachfront legend and after a more than $550M restoration and revitalization, this Victorian seaside resort is more stunning than ever. Located on Coronado Island just minutes from Downtown San Diego, this 28-acre National Historic Landmark was built in 1888 and has 938 guest rooms, cottages and villas with 97,500 square feet of banquet space, and 12 food and beverage outlets. This includes 9 restaurants & bars, marketplace, gelato shop, and in-room dining. The Controller is responsible for overseeing and directing all financial activities of the hotel to ensure financial integrity, operational efficiency, and compliance with accounting standards. This role safeguards hotel assets, prepares and analyzes financial reports in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and provides strategic financial guidance to hotel management and ownership. The Controller plays a key leadership role in supporting operational decision-making and maximizing profitability across all departments.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct all financial activities of the hotel including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial statements and reports in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Safeguard hotel assets through effective internal controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Monitor and approve all sales, purchases, salaries, and expenses to ensure alignment with financial plans and operational goals.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies, ownership requirements, and applicable regulations.
  • Serve as a financial advisor to hotel management and ownership by providing insights, analysis, and recommendations to support strategic decisions.
  • Analyze financial performance and identify opportunities to improve revenue, reduce costs, and increase profitability.
  • Assist and counsel department heads in interpreting financial data and recommend courses of action to maximize operational efficiency and financial performance.
  • Participate in executive leadership discussions and contribute to overall hotel strategy.
  • Prepare and manage the hotel’s annual operating plan, capital plan, and departmental budgets.
  • Develop financial projections and ongoing forecasts throughout the year.
  • Provide financial guidance to hotel management, corporate office, and ownership regarding financial trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Monitor budget performance and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
  • Interview, hire, train, supervise, counsel, schedule, and evaluate finance and accounting staff.
  • Foster a high-performance team environment with a focus on accuracy, accountability, and professional development.
  • Ensure team members understand hotel financial procedures and internal control standards.
  • Work closely with department leaders to ensure financial goals are integrated into operational planning.
  • Support revenue management, purchasing, payroll, and operational departments with financial analysis and guidance.
  • Oversee audits, tax filings, and financial compliance processes.
