As part of the essential functions, the Financial Counseling Specialist:

Requirements

  • Qualified Candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent, Associate degree preferred
  • minimum of six (6) months previous experience working with patients in a medical center/practice setting
  • certification as a NYS Health Assistor and/or Certified Application Counselor is preferred
  • must be able to communicate clearly and professionally in writing and verbally
  • must have familiarity with MS Office Software (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • must have excellent time management skills, problem solving and organizational skills
  • knowledge of different types of insurance coverage and policies required
  • awareness of and sensitivity to the issues and health disparities faced by underserved populations is essential

Nice To Haves

  • certification as a NYS Health Assistor and/or Certified Application Counselor is preferred
  • Associate degree preferred

Responsibilities

  • Verify insurance and financial information before appointments and help resolve any issues; document updates in the EMR for front desk staff.
  • Assist patients with insurance enrollment and recertification through the NY State of Health Marketplace.
  • Support self‑pay patients by collecting payments and setting up payment plans when needed.
  • Screen patients for Sliding Fee Scale eligibility and complete applications with those who qualify.
  • Contact insurance companies to confirm coverage and ensure procedures are billable.
  • Educate patients about their insurance benefits in clear, understandable terms.
  • Help eligible patients enroll in assistance programs and understand their coverage options.
  • Create tools and processes to help patients secure insurance, and serve as a link between clinic and billing teams.
  • Work closely with billing to prevent claim denials caused by incorrect insurance information.
