Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Three years of administrative staff or professional work.
  • Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to two years of the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from a college or university for the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a firearms instructor in the law enforcement or military field
  • Applicant must hold a valid MPCTC Academic Instructor Certification under COMAR 12.04.06 or be able to achieve such certification within six (6) months of beginning employment
  • Applicant must hold a valid MPCTC Firearms Instructor Certification under COMAR 12.04.06 or be able to achieve such certification within six (6) months of beginning employment
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience instructing firearms training to police recruits or in-service level students under the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission standards
  • Experience or certification as an end user or instructor in the use of Type 1-4 long guns
  • Armorer certifications in weapons commonly used in law enforcement
  • Experience in the set up/use of the MILO training simulator

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the evaluation of firearms student's skills, in an effort to determine if the student requires additional/remedial training
  • Assist with the training of qualified retired law enforcement officers in the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) and ensure all federal mandates are met
  • Assist staff and allied agencies with the set up and operation of the MILO firearms range simulator, training students in the use of force and judgemental scenarios
  • Assist staff with the general maintenance of the facility, opening and closing of buildings and ranges to include putting up/taking down targets, lifting and carrying barricades, cleaning the range, etc.
