Firefighter In Training- Non-experienced
About The Position
The City of Charleston Fire Department is looking for candidates for Firefighter Recruit; no prior fire service experience necessary. The academy is scheduled to start August 31, 2026. The recruit academy will focus on training and preparing the candidate to meet specific standards of the CFD. The program includes classroom instruction and hands on training in firefighter techniques, search and rescue, vehicle extrication, emergency medical services, firefighter survival, and the use of various firefighting tools and equipment. The candidate will work a 10-hour shift/5 days a week during the 28 week program. Upon successful completion of the required Recruit academy, personnel will progress into the position of a probationary firefighter working our current 1-3-2-3 schedule. (24 on – 72 off- 48 on-72 off) Before applying, please read this guide in its entirety. Only complete applications (with all required documents) will be accepted. Applications are accepted through May 22, 2026. Applicants will be contacted between May 26 and May 30, 2026 if they are selected to move forward. If selected to move forward: You will need to plan on participating in the in-person hiring process in Charleston, South Carolina from Saturday July 11, 2026 through Friday July 17, 2026. The schedule is as follows: Saturday, July 11, 2026 Pre-orientation, written test, physical ability test. Sunday, July 12, 2026 Physical ability test continued and interviews Monday, July 13, 2026 Physical ability test and interviews if needed. Tuesday, July 14, 2026 Job offers and gear fitting Wednesday-Friday, July 15 -July 17, 2026 Pre-Employment physicals and background checks.
Requirements
- 18 Years of age or older at the time of job offer
- High School diploma or GED equivalent
- Valid state issued driver’s license (You must obtain a South Carolina Driver’s license within 90 days of hire)
- A copy of your state issued driver’s license.
- A copy of your high school diploma, GED equivalent OR Official College transcript with degree awarded.
- Current Resume
- If prior military, a copy of your DD214 (copy 4)
- EMS certification status (NREMT or state EMT certification) – if applicable
