About The Position

The primary mission of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is to provide science-based environmental stewardship for the health and prosperity of all North Carolinians. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is the lead stewardship agency for the protection of North Carolina's environmental resources. The organization, which has offices from the mountains to the coast, administers regulatory programs designed to protect air quality, water quality, and the public's health, and works to advance in all-of-the-above energy strategy that fits North Carolina's needs. DEQ also offers technical assistance to businesses, farmers, local governments, and the public and encourages responsible behavior with respect to the environment through education programs provided at DEQ facilities and through the state's school system. DEQ touches the lives of all North Carolinians in many ways to enhance and ensure our quality of life. The Fisheries Technician will assist the Northern District biological staff in extensive field sampling (on and off the water, in a variety of weather conditions), data coding and verification, and compilation of datasets related to the monitoring and assessment of finfish and crustaceans. The Technician will record, compile, submit, and verify biological data taken from fishery-independent and dependent sampling programs. Data is collected using a variety of gears, including, but not limited to seines, trawls, gill nets and dredges. Duties include measuring, weighing, and identifying specimens; obtaining ageing structures, diet samples, and staging reproductive condition; tagging shrimp, crabs, and fish. Other duties include operating and maintaining outboard motors, boats, trailers, trucks and other sampling equipment, construction and repair of sampling equipment, lifting heavy cartons of fish, computer use, and working independently and with others. This position may be working late in the evening and early morning hours, weekends, and some overnight travel is required.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and trailers boats up to 24 feet.
  • Applies knowledge of commercial and recreational fisheries and associated fishing gears to conduct fisheries-dependent sampling.
  • Completes fisheries-independent sampling utilizing the following gears: trawls, crab pots, gill nets, seines, and water quality instruments.
  • Record, compile, submit, and verify all biological data taken from fisheries-dependent and -independent sampling activities.
  • Maintaining biological sampling gear, outboard motors, trailers, and trucks.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
