About The Position

The Fitter/Welder is responsible for the precise alignment, fitting, and welding of fabricated sheet metal components in accordance with engineering drawings and client specifications. This role operates within the Fabrication Department, producing high-quality manufactured products primarily using sheet metal for the oil and gas, marine, and energy markets. The Fitter/Welder is expected to demonstrate a high level of technical proficiency, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality and efficiency throughout all phases of the fabrication process.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in sheet metal fabrication or welding in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Intrapersonal Skills: Self-motivated and able to independently identify and resolve fabrication issues. Maintains a strong regard for safety guidelines, procedures, and professional integrity.
  • Production & Processing: Solid knowledge of sheet metal materials, fabrication processes, and quality control standards to support efficient and effective manufacturing.
  • Mechanical: Advanced proficiency in the operation and maintenance of fabrication tools and equipment, including welding machines, grinders, sanders, forklifts, overhead cranes, ironworkers, cutting torches, and bandsaws.
  • Technical Experience: Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and cut-sheet packages. Proficient in measuring, squaring, and MIG or Flux-Core welding.
  • Computer Skills: Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Business Suite for reviewing work orders and production documentation.
  • Communication Skills: Able to read and comprehend technical instructions and work orders and communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
  • Math Skills: Proficient in basic math and measurements applicable to fabrication and assembly specifications.
  • Arm-Hand Steadiness: Ability to maintain a steady hand and arm while performing detailed welding and fabrication tasks.
  • Visualization: Ability to interpret engineering drawings and mentally visualize how components will fit and function once assembled.
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to efficiently grasp, manipulate, and assemble sheet metal components and welding materials with precision.
  • High School diploma or GED required.

Nice To Haves

  • Heli-Arc (TIG) Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Independently review and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and layout specifications to determine fabrication requirements for sheet metal structures with minimal supervision.
  • Accurately position, align, and fit sheet metal parts in accordance with blueprint and layout specifications, applying 2+ years of hands-on experience to ensure precision, quality, and efficiency at every stage.
  • Confidently set up, calibrate, and adjust welding machines with proper wire speed settings across a variety of materials and thicknesses, drawing on proven experience to produce consistent, high-quality welds.
  • Proficiently execute welds in all positions — flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead — while independently inspecting completed welds for proper bead size, penetration, and structural integrity in accordance with quality standards.
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in manually applying filler rods to weld stainless steel and aluminum materials, ensuring all welds meet design and quality specifications.
  • Operate and maintain a full range of fabricating equipment including cutting torches, band saws, ironworkers, and grinders with a high degree of competency and safety awareness.
  • Clean and finish weld joints on stainless steel and aluminum using wire brush portable grinders or chemical baths, ensuring all surfaces meet finish and quality standards prior to painting or further processing.
  • Proactively identify and communicate material defects, drawing discrepancies, or process inefficiencies to supervisors, leveraging experience to recommend practical solutions.
  • Consistently complete job tasks within or ahead of estimated labor hours while maintaining high workmanship standards, demonstrating strong time management and production efficiency.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and well-organized work area at all times, adhering to all PPE requirements and actively contributing to a culture of workplace safety and OSHA compliance.
  • Serve as a technical resource and mentor for 2nd and 3rd Class Fitter/Welders, providing hands-on coaching, sharing best practices, and reinforcing quality and safety standards to support team development.
  • Collaborate effectively with engineering, quality control, and production teams to ensure all fabricated components meet design intent, client specifications, and delivery timelines.
