About The Position

The Fleet Maintenance Supervisor manages daily operations of the City’s mechanic shop servicing the municipal fleet, including Police, Fire, Public Works, Parks, Utilities, and specialty equipment. This role ensures safe, compliant, and cost-effective maintenance and repair programs; oversees staff scheduling and performance; manages parts and inventory; and drives preventive maintenance and reliability initiatives that maximize fleet uptime and public service readiness.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent desired.
  • Ability to operate various manual and/or motor driven tools.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Show aptitude for safe operation of assigned automotive equipment.
  • Must follow instructions, procedures and City safety rules and regulations.
  • Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.
  • Five years of fleet/mechanic experience including two+ years of supervision.
  • Diagnostic and repair knowledge across gas, diesel, and heavy equipment.
  • Valid NM driver’s license; CDL B preferred.
  • Knowledge of engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and diagnostics.
  • Proficiency with fleet management software.
  • Strong communication, budgeting, scheduling, and leadership skills.
  • Must pass a background investigation including work history, criminal records, driving records and other records deemed necessary.
  • Must pass a post-offer pre-employment drug screen administered by a City-designated facility.
  • Candidates must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and insurability in accordance with the City’s insurance carrier.
  • Random drug and alcohol testing is a condition of employment and will be tested under the authority of the Department of Transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE certification preferred, but not required.
  • Previous work experience on diesel engines preferred.
  • Valid NM driver’s license; CDL B preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Safe, efficient, and effective maintenance of city vehicles, small engines, and equipment.
  • Plan, assign, and supervise the work of mechanics and shop personnel; set priorities for inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance (PM).
  • Ensure timely support for critical operations including after-hours emergencies when needed.
  • Maintain and enforce shop safety practices and compliance with OSHA and City policies.
  • Oversee inspections, diagnostics, and repairs of light/heavy-duty vehicles, heavy equipment, small engines, and specialized public safety apparatus.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
  • Maintain PM schedules, inspection records, work orders, warranties, recalls, and certification documentation.
  • Develop and manage the fleet maintenance budget; monitor labor, parts, fuel, fluids, tools, outside services, and capital tool needs.
  • Source parts and services; obtain quotes/bids per City procurement policy; manage vendor relationships.
  • Maintain parts room, tooling, diagnostic equipment, and shop asset inventory.
  • Use the City’s fleet management system to track work orders, PM compliance, downtime, and lifecycle costs.
  • Produce monthly and annual reports with recommendations.
  • Recommend vehicle/equipment specifications and lifecycle replacement schedules.
  • Recruit, train, coach, and evaluate staff.
  • Promote a safety-first, customer service–oriented culture.
  • Serve as the liaison to operating departments; communicate status and priorities.
  • Coordinate vehicle commissioning/decommissioning.
