Requirements

  • US citizenship or lawful permanent residence is required in order to be considered for this position.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and speaking skills, plus organization and keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and productively in a professional setting.
  • Can initiate and lead, including big-picture perspective and implementation of detailed plans.
  • Ability to work well with faculty, staff, and students throughout the university.
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
  • One to two years’ experience in international student/scholar advising.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity, patience, and comfort in presenting before a large audience.
  • Understanding of F and J non-immigrant regulations and importance of sensitive deadlines, and knowledge of SEVIS
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
  • Successful pre-employment background check
  • Must be legal US citizen or US legal permanent resident (green card holder)

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in relevant educational discipline and two to three years’ experience in foreign student/scholar advising.
  • Experience working, living, and/or studying abroad.
  • Current knowledge of F, J and H-1B regulations, SEVIS functionality, reporting requirements, and Advisor duties.
  • Experienced cross-cultural trainer and knowledge of Carnegie Mellon academic programs a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Shared responsibilities for advising the 8,000+ international students and scholars on Carnegie Mellon visa documents.
  • Performing duties focused on immigration-related matters, including immigration advising and precise record-keeping as required by federal law while following university policies and procedures.
  • providing on-going coordination with university departments before and after student and scholar arrival, program development and implementation, policy development, advocacy, and special projects.
  • collaborating closely with other OIE staff in addition to university colleagues in various units including academic and administrative departments, as well as with other units within Enrollment Services.
