About The Position

The State Crime Laboratory of the Department of Justice maintains a full service forensic science laboratory to assist all law enforcement agencies in North Carolina in the investigation of criminal matters. The Laboratory’s mission is to provide state-of-the-art forensic services in the areas of drug analysis, blood alcohol/drug content, firearms, latent prints, footwear and tire tracks, forensic biology, computer forensics, and trace evidence. The services are provided from a central laboratory in Raleigh, N.C. and regional laboratories located in Edneyville, N.C. and Greensboro, N.C. The primary purpose of the Forensic Scientist Supervisor is to directly supervise a team of Forensic Scientists within the Quality Management Section. Work includes conducting the procedurally required quality system activities to ensure accreditation requirements are met. This position oversees the safety program at all three laboratory locations as well as the overall Laboratory training programs. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. This position is responsible for the management of time and directing the activities of a group of scientists. Management duties include assigning and managing quality activity assignments, assigning laboratory and administrative duties, Performance Management Evaluations, counseling and discipline of employees, administrative and management reports for the group, ensuring new scientists are properly trained before beginning work for quality management activities, and ensuring scientists have received necessary training to complete assigned tasks. The selected candidate will undergo and must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation which may take several months to complete. The background investigation includes: • polygraph • credit and arrest checks • interviews with associates to include personal and business references, past employers, and neighbors • verification of education achievement • fingerprinting • urinalysis drug screening

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major based on the area of assignment in forensic science, forensic studies, physics, chemistry, biology, molecular genetics, computer science, or closely related science and six years of experience performing bench level analysis in a specific forensic science discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must obtain individual certification consistent with international and ISO standards within eighteen months of the date the analyst becomes eligible to seek certification according to the standards of the certifying entity.

  • ISO/IEC 17025 assessor experience with a focus on forensic testing.
