About The Position

Under the direction of the Building Trades Supervisor, the General Maintenance Technician (GMT) is responsible for completing assigned work orders relating to the University’s 7-day, 24-hour service program for the safe operation, maintenance, and general upkeep of Brandeis facilities, buildings and equipment. Responds to routine general services requests as well as any/all emergency requests to ensure a safe and functional campus. Performs basic tasks associated with all major building trades (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC and locksmithing). Covers shifts or portions of shifts for other employees working in the 24-hour service program. May be assigned to one or more trade shops. Shift: Sunday–Thursday, 7:00am–3:00pm (Friday/Saturday off) Hourly Rate: $34.50 Swing Shift: This position may be required to work a swing shift (3:00pm–11:00pm /11:00pm–7:00am) to fill a vacancy. Job Description: Carpentry: Wall repair; furniture repair; hang writing boards, shelving, and pictures; window and door hardware repair; ceiling tile replacement; window blind and shade repair and installation; window screen fabrication and installation; carpet and tile repair; painting. Locksmithing: Basic repair or replacement of door hardware including closers, locks, and cylinders. Electrical: Replace lamps, bulbs, and lens covers; test generators, take meter readings; clean electrical and mechanical areas; reset breakers. Plumbing: Clean grease traps, clean and/or replace filters; unclog drains and toilets; replace faucet washers. HVAC: Make minor repairs or adjustments to heating and air conditioning equipment; cut threads, repack pumps; lubricate fans, motors, control units; change filters; install or remove heating /air conditioning units. Emergency Response: Upon receiving such instruction from Campus Public Safety personnel, shut down or close fire sprinkler valves; reset fire alarm panels. Assists other GMT staff with their daily tasks as needed, including carrying and transporting loads. Provides appropriate support during various university events, including annual electrical shutdown, opening of school and commencement. General: Follows proper safety procedures and observes all safety rules and regulations including OSHA. Cleans work areas and maintains tools and equipment. Reports on building damages, malfunctioning equipment, needed maintenance and/or repairs in assigned work areas. Responds to emergency call ins. Inputs data into computerized work order system, recording time and work order information. Participates in training to keep and acquire knowledge, skills and abilities to remain current with standard operational practices and revised standards. Maintains appropriate certifications and licenses. Interacts professionally and follows up with members of the campus community. Additional Job Description: Physical/Environmental Demands: Must be physically able to perform all the essential duties of the position as set forth in this Position Description, including but not limited to the following: Always observe safety rules. Read, write, understand and carry out oral and written instructions in English. Work on ladders, scaffolds and rooftops, in bucket trucks, pits, manholes and other confined spaces. Work in an environment subject to frequent changing of priorities and time deadlines. Ability to operate a variety of stationery and portable power tools (drill, reciprocating saw, circular saw, table saw, radial saw, miter saw, nail gun, etc.) and various hand tools. Drive a University vehicle. Bend, stoop, manually lift and move equipment and supplies up to 60 pounds (heavier material or equipment is lifted using other methods).

Requirements

  • High or trade school graduate, or GED.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years full-time demonstrated, documented experience performing a variety of work within the associated trades.
  • Ability to keep records, write reports and identify job related materials.
  • Ability to cover shifts or portions of shifts for other employees working in the 24-hour service program.
  • Valid and current Massachusetts Driver’s License.
